Their alright. As I've stated previously, its the firewall I can't stand. But oh well. What can ya do... not many firewall programs work with Vista yet.

Could surely be an interesting OS...

I just would be really disappointed to pay 3 times the price of MacOSX (which I believe is much better), a million times the price of a Linux OS (Debian or Ubuntu being among my favorite) and get an OS that doesn't allow me to do what I want on my computer, and pretends to be secure while shipping the most horrible security software ever made and even preventing from developping another one legally.

All in all, I'm better off paying for a trip in nature than for a box with a metal door, even if the metal looks like gold from far away, thanks.

Running on Vista here atm, it eats the memory, got a gb of RAM which I though would be sufficiant, but slows down when I use Flash 8 pro to the point of wanting to rip your hair out, turn off some of the pointless bells and whistles and it runs pretty smooth, this is on a 2.8mhz Duel core CPU as well so I was pretty shocked as I upgraged from Semp 1.4...

Some of the drivers are still buggy for certain things as well, Soundblaster driver isnt 100%

GFX driver does some crazy things on HL2, all shadows are square....

Skype doesnt work properly, cant use me VOIP phone either atm which I need for work.

Zonealarm doesnt install.

No vista patches for Call of Duty.

But er.. appart from that yeah, its cool.

In its defence it still is early days and is does seem a lot more solid and secure, I like the Admin feature as well, cant make changes to the system unless you allow admin access to the program.

So Im 50 50 with it atm until new drivers and more support comes out for it.

Well said about the eating RAM piece. I have 504 MB of RAM and its slow sometimes. One thing I noticed was when I did reformatted my laptop, whiped the harddrive clean, and installed Vista, it worked faster. Not to mention I have lots of free space on my HD compared to the last time Vista was on.

My Macs behave perfectly on the network with the PCs. Often times, the PCs can't see the Macs, but the Macs can see the PCs. If you get a Mac, you won't want to be on the PCs anymore anyway. The Mac is essentially zero-configuration for networking, wheras Windows requires a networking wizard and a restart that takes about 20 minutes. With the Mac, you just plug it in to the network and click Network in the Finder's left Pane.

Apple got rid of the single button mouse a while ago, they switched to one that somehow magically senses whether you clicked it on the right or on the left. Any USB mouse will work though.

Windows is NOT easier to use, you're just used to it. If you believe that, you're just kidding yourself. The Mac makes Windows look a bit like a Rubik's cube. Every application is nearly identical in form and function. Once you figure out one of them you can figure out any of them.

And sure, there are some things that aren't available on the Mac, but there are a lot of things that aren't available for Windows, either. Like Adium, Disk Utility, iBackup, iLife, Photo Booth, and Senuti (iPod to Mac transfer), just to name a few <<all of which are available free.

And now there's Boot Camp, so if you ever wanted to go back to Windoze completely, you could.

Lots of new Services running in Vista... just got a couple books to see what they do. Runs sweet if your system is up to par, think I remember people yacking about the same resource hogging stuff when XP came out. People adapted and upgraded anyways.

But at least then, you could turn stuff off and that would speed it up to almost as fast as 2000.

Meh, I've not been too impressed with Vista. Matter of fact I've been annoyed and frustrated lol. I'm a software freak, and love playing with new toys, so I looked forward to playing with Vista. I was pretty sure it would have some hiccups since it was so new, but still, what I got was unexpected.

After I installed Vista I encountered the standard driver issues that accompany any new release of an OS running on an open hardware base. There were some minor annoyances like the fact that the updated audio drivers I installed from the windows update later insisting that they were not designed for Vista EVERY time you drilled down a level in the control panel.

lol, it got old real fast. If these drivers were not designed for windows Vista why are they being offered through Windows Vista update? Lol!

The fact that the control panel refused to go into advanced mode (AKA not category view) was another minor annoyance.

The thing that killed Vista for me though was its crazy invalidation scheme. I installed a harmless little game called Maple Story on Vista, only to have it invalidate my ENTIRE copy of Vista (!!!)

I have used this game on XP and continue to use it. It is not (intentionally) malicious in any way. However, in Vista after I exited Maple Story I received a prompt stating that I needed to validate my copy of Vista. The validation then failed and I was unceremoniously dropped into Reduced Functionality Mode where I could only use IE7. All other programs are disallowed in RFM. Lol, they don't even give you a start bar! Prior to installing Maple Story I had SUCCESSFULLY validated my copy of Vista mind you.

No big deal I thought. Just a very odd, very rare glitch right? One Restart, Reformat, Re-install of Vista later I tried Maple Story again. Once again I got my copy of Vista invalidated. A friend of mine just recently got his copy of Vista invalidated by simply installing a new stick of RAM! He had to get a new key code.

If it is this easy to invalidate Vista by accident, can you imagine the nasty viruses that could do it on purpose? Oy.

Well, for those of you still serious considering the update to Vista, I thought I would give you my scoop(and vent a few of my frustrations in the process) . I bought a new laptop last month, and it came pre-installed with Vista Ultimate. Now, I have plenty of power to keep up with it(I decided to go all out since I had to replace the laptop anyway). 2gigs of ram, 2.0ghz AMD Turion 64 proc, 256mb dedicated gfx card, easily enough to handle most things. So for the most part, I haven't had too much trouble. all the more common programs I've tried have worked fine out of the box. the only troubles I've had have been smaller things, such as a program to take snapshops from my built in HP webcam, for example, or a maphack for Diablo II(yes, I cheat, get over it. it's not like it's a game where I'm going up against other people, and the maphack eliminates certain apects of the game I find tedious without taking anything away from other players). I've(fairly predictably, since it came installed out of the box) not had any driver problems. The user controls and firewall have been a bit irritating, but for the most part I have them tweaked now to a level where I'm comfortable. I should also mention that there are no drivers for my Verizon Wireless phone(a HUGE irritation), though that's more of a fault on Verizon's side than on Microsoft's. I like to use my phone to get on occasionally at work, and that alone has me still considering downgrading to XP(I have a legal copy of XP pro that I was able to download for free though the MSDN academic alliance). I'm still holding out in hopes that Verizon will get on the ball and get us drivers though. Good luck to all of you who are planning on taking the leap, it's really not too bad. Certain features(such as the instant start menu search thing!!!!!!) make it worth it, for now at least.

PS---I should say that I turned off all the fancy Aero effects a couple weeks after I got it(though it did work fine while I had it), the only thing that would indicate that I'm using Vista at all(interface wise) is the start menu search. I'm a fairly simplistic person though, and am the type of person that still uses the windows classic interface, under Vista and XP.

It says it is for volume licenses and OEM versions but I had the same problem as you and I had the retail version. This patch fixed it.

The only reason i got vista is so that i can play dx10 games. So far i havent had any problems. I didnt even know if my creative sound card would work with vista. I was worried i would have to buy a new one just for that reason, but the drivers did work for me. I was also surprised that there were drivers for my nokia phone/internet.

Livinloud316, you dont need to install a vista version of mpv ,or whatever it is called for motorolla pc suite. Just install the driver and setup a new connection.If i understood what you were saying.I use my cell phone as a modem.

I am surprised how how smooth it runs, i expected more lags/glitches etc. But if you are running the 32 bit version of vista and play games you need 2 gigs of ram. Even in xp a game will draw your memory usage up to 1.2 gigs in some instances. So with vista using 400-600 mb at idle + a game that could run you up to 1.6 gigs of ram usage.Virtualy memory cant keep up with that demand.

So i just dual boot. Play dx9 games on xp and dx10 will be saved for vista. I dont believe you should have to be designed to fit a pc, it should be designed to fit you. But what other option do we have at this point?
