Define what you mean by Los Angeles. There's a bit of difference between the San Fernando Valley and the intersection of Florence and Normandy


Get rid of the system and put in a new system. One with Christian identity and focus's teaching on ALL aspects of life. Including marriage and family.


We already have multiple education systems. Maybe you missed my article where I used Eric Holder to try and spark a discussion upon race. I spent 12 years in the Catholic schools and am a better man for it. I would also say that in the United States we can't put in any kind of system with a formally Christian identity because that would actually violate the constitution.


In public schools in cities the kids tend to control the system, not the teachers. Many of the teachers have given up and just get by each day. Its a miserable life for them


I agree with the idea that the students in urban public schools can sometimes be lacking, and that much of that comes from the home, but it doesn't mean it hurts to try. If you can reach one kid and get him to go to college rather than putting on a bandana and going out and committing street crimes then maybe you have accomplished something.



Actually yes, through my parish. We do activities that are in schools at times. Also retreats that have interaction with schoolers.



No , the PTA is a secular liberal front group that has already supported things that hurt children in the long run. The PTA also fails to support voucher subsidies to religious schools. The PTA is more involved i liberal politics than the actual betterment of children.

I somehow doubt that the PTA is a "liberal front group"

And one wonders why no one trusts the Republicans to run the government anymore.


What you are basically saying is that your station in birth should determine your station in life. A very un-American way of belief. I would say however that for every poor kid that does slip through the system, and it is the majority, there is one who actually wants to make it out, and works their way out, using the public system as best they can to get into college with a scholarship and then to graduate school and then to fame and fortune.


Under your plan, if that person didn't have the money to afford the private education, they would also slip through the cracks even though they wanted to learn. That's unacceptable and that's un-American.


I honestly feel that we should maintain the existence of private and public systems, but that we should do like they do in Europe, and basically give a test when the children are 10-12, and based on the results of those aptitude tests, set them on that track, and require private institutions to follow suit. I feel this would do far more for education by putting the talented with the talented, the ordinary with the ordinary and so on. Might even make for a better society.

I suggest that Maren take a long daze at many of our inner city public schools. That is, if you can get past all the crackheads, gangs, fist fights, and drug dealers that surround them.

But thats what happens when you let a system take care of your children.

What makes you think they will actually teach their children? Most families now, especially in urban areas, are single parent families. Exactly when are they going to homeschool?

Then how do you account for the fact that H.S. grads make more money than non H.S. grads, and that Associate degree holders make more money than H.S. grads,and that Bachelors degree holders make more money than Associate degree holders etc?

You are absolutely correct. There was a documentary on HBO a while back about a high school in Baltimore. The teachers and administrators would beg parents to make sure the children made it to school, but parents wouldn't do anything. The problem is, you can't arrest all the people who are doing this, and you can't take away all their children due to logistics problems. Where would they go and what would you do with all the children?

I'm not really sure what the solution is. How can you make people interested in learning who think that no matter what they do their lives will be terrible?
