  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How the Mueller Investigation could play out...

How the Mueller Investigation Could Play Out for Trump

Short version:

If Mueller finds no wrongdoing, he sends his report to Rosenstein, who doesn't have to release it to Congress (but we all know Donald will order him to)

If Mueller does find wrongdoing, he can:
1. Send it to Rosenstein, who would most likely (unless Donald orders otherwise) send it to Congress, and leave the decision to impeach up to them
2. Send a report to Congress via Rosenstein (see above), and get a grand jury to label Donald a co-conspirator ("The Nixon Option"), using that process to insure a public record that not even Donald could cover up -- if he were so inclined to...
3. Get an indictment (which the DoJ says cannot be done to a sitting president, but could still be argued in front of SCOTUS)

Forgiving the NYT's paywall, it looks like a pretty succinct breakdown of what could happen...

...thoughts?

Personally, if Mueller does find wrongdoing, my money's on the Nixon option. Donald could order Rosenstein to bury the report and claim that there was never anything to report (assuming Rosenstein wouldn't resign in protest, but then Donald would simply appoint someone who would do it), but he can't make a Grand Jury go away...

I'd rather see it play on out until they're up to their neck in it and try to quit, then I want to see them pursued and wiped out .. They sowed it now let them reap it ..

Just so we're clear -- are you referring to Team Donald or Team Mueller?

Good information.

I would say that #2 is probably the best option. With Nunes actively trying to snitch to Daddy Donny and sabotage from within, whatever charges Mueller brings will need to be done in such a way that congressional Republicans (whom I wouldn't trust to walk a dog) can't ignore it.

The idea, though, that Mueller would come up with nothing at this point is pretty outlandish. This isn't a dig at either OP or the article; I know it's a theoretical avenue that they have to cover. But there's clearly "there, there", and my sense (for whatever that's worth) is that it's only a matter of time before the Trump crime syndicate goes down in flames.

My sense as well -- it's only a question of whether or not the captain goes down with the ship.

It'd depend on what the wrongdoing was. Obstruction would probably result in a toothless slap on the wrist. Then again, maybe Pelosi is this close to finding that last Dragon Ball and will wish the evidence of actual collusion into existence and it'll show up in Mueller's P.O. Box.

Nixon resigned to avoid that toothless slap on the wrist.

Incorrect.

Nixon resigned because public support for him collapsed and his own party's support for him collapsed. He was asked to resign by leadership in his own party ... and he did.

Apples and oranges.

I really wish people knew their history better. This reminds me of something, but it isn't Watergate.

It's much more similar to how the patronage system got largely dismantled following the Civil War.

Used to be, civil service jobs were considered part of the "spoils of war" and any politician could give their friends any spot they wanted. It's bad now, but it used to be worse. Way, way worse. People joked about how bad things were, but anyone who tried to make a fuss was quickly told to shut up.

Then someone refused to shut up about how civil service needed reforms.

Cue every single corrupt in every state and county crapping bed HARD and doing everything they could to put a stop to any attempt to clean up the government, because in doing so their dirty underwear could and WOULD be hung out to dry for the whole world to see it. As reform became an inevitability, a bunch of these guys got caught with their dirty under-roos hanging out because they did so much shady stuff trying to prevent their other dealings from being stopped they tipped their hand and made reforms inevitable.

It's happening all over again, and I'm laughing my rear off.

Actually he resigned after the tapes were released and it was then known that Nixon knew about the break-in shortly after it happened, and had approved the plans to cover it up. Congressional leadership let him know he would end up removed in impeachment.

The Saturday Night massacre did not help him.

I don't believe that's quite accurate. It was never clear that there was sufficient support to effect Nixon's involuntary removal from office. He was asked to resign in order to avoid the disgrace and divisive politics which would accompany impeachment proceedings. To his credit, Nixon chose the higher road.

And why did that support collapse? Because Nixon just kept making himself look more and more guilty as he descended into blithering paranoia until even his most ardent supporters couldn't stand behind him... and all over a "toothless" obstruction charge.

Clinton was also hit with obstruction of justice. Remember how well that turned out?

Sounds like everyone but Donald is corrupt. "Mr. Trump goes to Washington."
