How should Romans 10:13 read?

“For “everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved.”. . .”-New World transaltion of the Holy Scriptures

"since everyone who calls on the name of Adonai will be delivered. Footnote reads, "A.do.nai - the LORD, Jehovah."-'Jewish New Testament’ translated by David H. Stern p.211.

"For Whoever calls with the name of Yahweh will be saved""-'The Book Of Yahweh - The Holy Scriptures' p.881.

"for whoever shall call on the name of Yahweh shall be saved."-'The Sacred Scriptures' (Bethel Edition) p.883.

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."-King James Version

I said
One should understand what Lord or LORD means. In the old testament the Father was both LORD and God. But in the new testament the Father turned over the title of Lord to Jesus. Not LORD but Lord.

Gen 2:4
4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
(NKJ)

Depends on how you look at it. Is there two Lords?

Jude 1:4
4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only LORD God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
(NKJ)

Or is there only one LORD and one Lord?

1 Cor 8:6
6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

Rom 10:13 For, "every one who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved."
Rom 10:14 But how are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher?
Rom 10:15 And how can men preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news!"
Rom 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel; for Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?"
Rom 10:17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ. [This nullifies the myth of 'Scripture Alone'. The Bible was not defined by Pope St. Damasus I until the 4th century. The printing press was not invented until the 15th century. By and large man did not become literate until the 20th century. The Faith was handed down orally.....until recently.]
Rom 10:18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have; for "Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world." [Evidence of the realization of Mat 24:14 --- a fait acompli ].

i would tend towards the second option... as the idea of being 'saved' as a ticket to heaven was unheard of when this was said. The reason being, all Jews understood there place as the covenant people and believed what the Talmud later came to say... "all Israel has a share in the world to come" which sounds a lot like "all israel shave be saved" which Paul said.

Looks to me like some are seeking another name to call God by than Jesus.

Beware: There are Bibles out there for just about every group of individuals and uses and seems like just about every other day there is the latest greatest translation of the week coming out with it's latest easy to understand re-interpretted Scriptures sure to get you saved. Has any one found a Bible for Martians yet? When they land I'm sure they'll need their own Bible too!

Ummmmmmmmmm............as far as I know there is only One Name that we use to call God, the Holy Name of Jesus. And then we could open up the can of worms about what it means to be saved. Are YOU saved yet?

I'm sure I've insulted all the Yahwists and Jehovah witnesses and Adonists etc. there are. And don't leave out the moral relativists who say things like, "what does it matter what name you use for God as long as you call on someone?" May their Higher Powers be blessed!

Oooops... I'm in a contrary mood.

Peace and all good,

Gail

It could be read like Jesus himself said it in John 3:16

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Believing in the only begotten Son, is believing in Jesus of Nazareth who is the Savior of the world.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD = YHVH (some pronounce it "Yahweh", "Jehovah"). However it has no official or real pronunciation. The Jews use "Adonai" which means Lord as in Master. Or "HaShem" which is translated to mean, "the Name".

The word "save" is "sozo" in the Greek. 1a. [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Geneva]to keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction [/FONT][FONT=Verdana, Arial, Geneva]1b. to save a suffering one (from perishing)[/FONT].

The Old Testament many times uses the word "deliver" - to be brought out of trouble. So using the word in the Romans 10:13 text is allowable.

So, in Romans 10:13 "saved" would mean "..so as to not perish".

If you want to read it word for word as it is in the greek, use an interlinear

Scripture4All - Greek/Hebrew interlinear Bible software

Romans 10:13 For every-one who ever should be calling-upon the name of Lord shall be being saved

Greek New Testament - Parallel Greek New Testament by John Hurt

Textus Rec.) Romans 10:13 paV gar oV an epikaleshtai to onoma kuriou swqhsetai

interlinears are great but do not help when circumlocutions, figures of speech or idiomatic expressions are used.

Steve

p.s. if you read this verse in the NT, look it up as well in the OT Hebrew and if possible look at it in the pe[wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth]ta and targum as well.

One must always see Bible verses in their various contexts. Here Paul is showing that the Gospel is that we saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and His atoning work. We need to hear and believe this truth and call on the Lord Jesus to save us from the condemnation of our sins.

If they go directly to the source, Yahweh, there is no need for a preacher.

Rom 10:18
But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

Col 1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven;

How should Romans 10:13 read?

“For “everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah

In Greek: πᾶς γὰρ ὃς ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου σωθήσεται.

Literally: For whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

ESV: For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

There is no "Adonai" or "Jehovah" here, since they are Hebrew, but instead the Greek κυρίου (kyrie) = "Lord"

That is correct and it shows that they were speaking of Christ, from Rom 10:9, not God, the Father.
Rom 10:9οτι εαν ομολογησης εν τω στοματι σου κυριον ιησουν και πιστευσης εν τη καρδια σου οτι ο θεος αυτον ηγειρεν εκ νεκρων σωθηση
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

No!

The New Testament uses kyrie = "Lord" for both the Father and the Son. It's one way in which the NT shows Christ's divinity.

Versions of the NT produced by non-Trinitarian groups (like the Jehovah's Witnesses) often change some uses of kyrie to "Yahweh" or "Jehovah," as a way of downplaying NT teaching about Christ's divinity. However, this is mistranslation.

Romans 10:13 is in fact quoting Joel 2:32: "And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved."

In the Septuagint (the Greek OT used in NT times), this reads: καὶ ἔσται πᾶς ὃς ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου σωθήσεται

Compare Romans 10:13, which differs only in the linkage word γὰρ = "for": πᾶς γὰρ ὃς ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου σωθήσεται

WRONG! 1Co 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto Him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Rom 10:9
οτι εαν ομολογησης εν τω στοματι σου κυριον ιησουν και πιστευσης εν τη καρδια σου οτι ο θεος αυτον ηγειρεν εκ νεκρων σωθηση

Rom 10:9
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Rom 10:13
πας γαρ ος αν επικαλεσηται το ονομα κυριου σωθησεται
Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord [Jesus] shall be saved.
