"Drive geometry is incorrectly reported on the partition table" - use lilo rather than GRUB - that can be change in YAST....

For forgotten passwords - if its an unhardeded linux box boot to init 1.... straight to root access with no password..... (who sayed Linux was secure! ;) )

Swart,

You've helped me realize why I charge $85 an hour for on-site work. Friend or no friend, that eats up way too much time.

When you tell 'em how much it will cost, they're usually quite willing to crash the HD and reload the OS. Saves time for me and money for them!

I know. I just can't bring myself to charge individuals. Companies, no problem!

That's why I've just bought 60 identical second hand computers and I'm installing each one identically. I'm only going to make $20 on each unit, but the message will be clear: You want help, buy one of these! Since I will keep an image of the main partition, all I'll have to do is rewrite and leave!

Let me know if you have any questions. Be sure to look over the documentation on freebsd.org -- the Handbook is very well written.

Dumb question... If it had Windows XP why didn't you just restore it, say, back four months? Then run the virus update and run the virus checker to get rid of any viruses before that date.
A number of reasons:

1) It was Pre SP1
2) For all I knew it was there from the start
3) It was an unlicensed copy with a hacked serial number
4) Not all devices were working
5) There were multiple other problems
6) She didn't own a virus checker, and I didn't have one with me.
7) I have an agenda to rid the world of M$

I still use XP for software development and games. Free anivirus software at Grisoft.com called AVG. Pretty good stuff. Plus, open source software from the Linux community is opening up for XP left and right, making it much less painfull for us poor folk recently out of college!!

P.S. - I had more trouble installing the latest from SUSE than FC2. Kind of weird. But I definitely agree with you about KDE, I love it!

I am all for migrating peoples onto Linux or BSD platforms. :)

And I think that's a good idea to sell support, by prebuilding cheap Linux computers that is.. Go for it Swart!

I might try that one too, although the community I live in is a lot bigger than 800 people, more like a 100 000 or so.

There used to be a guy in the area that was happy to work on desktops. I used to direct all enquiries to him, saying that he was more up to date with desktop technologies. Unfortunately, he moved out. Now they keep coming to me.
