How do you want God?

I was driving by this church a few nights ago. I drive by this particular church often, and they always have some sort of thought provoking quote or question on their church sign.

So, a couple nights ago I drove by and this was what they had:

How do you want God to be...Merciful? or Just?

This kind of confused me because it sounds like you should be picking one or the other. And in my opinion, I think God is both merciful and just. That's what the Bible says, right?

Any other thoughts or ideas?

Yep, I agree, God is both merciful and just. He shows mercy (though undeserved) when someone repents of his sin and turns to follow Him. However if the person rejects God and chooses not to follow Him then God's justice will prevail (and that WILL be deserved).

The bible says he is HOLY which includes both

BOth of coarse.. but I see it as Through his Justness he is merciful. He judges those to who He will show mercy.

AGREED , His justice and his mercy are the same.

Indeed I once debated with an atheist who said " If GOD is merciful then everyone would go to heaven , if he is just then no one would " , the reality is however that these two things are not contradictory but complementary , as described above.

Yes, he is both. I don't know what verses exactly, but every in the OT you find God punishing. However he is always helping and forgiving too.
