  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That's a very profound scripture you chose.
Most people are eager to do the teaching part...
In reality, the "teaching" is supposed to come after the "go make disciples, and baptize them" part
IMO, we are to teach (those we disciple) to obey everything He commanded us.
Which would be what?

There are many methods of teaching, if that is the question.

The Bible is really a very condensed book, and so, finding detailed answers there might be difficult.

Remember, the Spirit is our counselor and comforter. Teaching from the Flesh is guaranteed to fail; we must teach in the power and guidance of the Spirit.

Many fail on this requirement; they want to teach what they want to - not what God wants them to. Thus, they fail to make much of an impact because God (and His Spirit) is not with them.

Never preach!

Yes, that's my recommendation. Preaching is for pastors/ministers - not teachers. Preaching should be aimed at those sinners who need to hear the Word of Salvation - perhaps for the first time.

Teaching, on the other hand, is for those who hunger for the Word, and may have no doubts about its Truth. They are already believers; they just need further affirmation and instruction.

In my methods, I often make an argument, and then go to great lengths to teach against it. Result? Increased attention due to the desire to see how I will extricate myself from the messy position I've put myself in.

Sometimes, I do not even open the Bible - or read a verse from it. This is because I am using such familiar verses and passages that the attendees already know them, and I can keep the flow of the narrative going without interruption.

Your mileage may vary.

Blessings,

D

Presuming you are refering to teaching style, I have taught adult and High School classes for some years now and have found that first and foremost the class must own the topic to be studied. I do not have the insight to know what the class needs to study so allow them to talk about different ideas / interests and eventually the class decides on a given topic.

Secondly, I love doing the research and presenting opposing interpretations as I am a strong believer that God gave us a brain to use. Therefore, our faith is strengthened when we are faced with a viewpoint different than our own and must decide why we agree or disagree with a given interpretation.

So the third part is that I am a strong believer in group discussion and staying with a given lesson for multiple Sundays if necessary until the group is satisfied there is nothing more to learn.

Sincerely,

OldChurchGuy

That is a very difficult question to ask because when we teach, we are to teach as Jesus did, with loving authority. I you are unsure of what you are trying to teach, you have not prayed and meditated enough on it and you need to get busy.

One important thing of note, Jesus almost always used parables when teaching large crowds. The reason for doing this was message amplification, it is easier to understand when put into context of that day for those who had gathered.

While teaching a lesson about how God is building His kingdom, I literally took a decent sized rock that weighed about 6 or 7 pounds and put it on the table. Then we began to talk about what made this rock unique, what is could be used for and things like that. I then got into the lesson of how God is building His kingdom through us, and how in Revelation where the walls of the city are being described how that was describing how God was ultimately using us. Towards the end of the lesson I got up and started drawing a stone wall on the dry erase board while the class was discussing the verses and topics. When I had finished drawing the wall, I then according to the scriptures began to fill in names, Jesus as the corner stone, the 12 apostles as the foundation, then above that I began to write all the names of the people in the class.

To finish I asked the same question I opened with, How is God building the Kingdom of Heaven. That lesson was very inspired by the Holy Spirit, did I mention that I have a huge fear of public speaking, and the class I teach is a class of either teachers or Bible College students and this is my first time to teach a Bible Study Class. Talking about David -vs- Goliath, so I have to pray a lot and seek wisdom and authority, if I miss the mark on following the Holy Spirit I can surely tell.

So I say teach as Jesus taught, with authority given from God through the Holy Spirit and to make it relationally topical, or just talk about things that are going on around them and how the Bible addresses that, as I have not found anything the Bible does not address, and yes it even addresses how to go to the bathroom and not offend anyone. I have been a teacher and pastor for many years now and learned few good principles on teaching.

First of all never teach on any thing without making Christ the centre,
no one can never continue in doing good without having an intimate
relationship with Christ "Abiding in Christ".

We can teach people on what is right and wrong, evil and good,
but that does not give them the power to do it.
Read Romans 8:3-4 it explains how the law was weak to change man
and how Christ came to inable man to live the spiritual life.

Whenever we do not have Christ as the centre of our teaching we
remove people from the power that can change us to live in the spirit.

Christ will build His Church (us) on the revelation of Himself.
Matthew 16:15-18
If we do not make Christ the centre of the message we have an empty
shell "empty deceit" Colossians 2:8

All treasures of wisdom and knowledge is in Christ. Colossians 2:3
There are millions of messages to teach from, for all Scripture is about Christ who is the Word of God.

As we teach Him and orbits around Him it will teach His people to be focused on Him and abide in Him, which will then change them through the abiding in Christ. John 15:5

Christ should have preeminence in all things Colossians 1:18,
"all things" also includes our preaching, teaching and sermons.

That is an open-ended question. I do a lot of teaching and some of it is academic and in the classroom and some of it is in the church and some is in the small group setting of a living room. Each group has different needs, but each needs the Scriptures to be opened.

My website now has a huge set of free downloadable PowerPoint presentations on every book of the Bible as well as on a growing number of biblical topics. Feel free to check it out -- JohnStevenson.net -- (hope I am not breaking any rules by making this offer).

I simply teach my understanding of the scriptures. I don't follow any rules because the Spirit will bring up various topics for discussion during a teaching. I also encourage people to ask any question they wish at any time they wish as long as it is on topic.

I do a lot of my teaching through writing and blogging, particularly on prayer and faith, usually beginning with a Scripture text and discussing the meaning. Often, I teach about a passage from the Psalms (my daily habit includes praying in the Psalms).
On Tuesday mornings, I lead a Bible study group ( we are currently going through Hebrews). We begin in a context of worship and prayer, then I lead us through the text. Questions come up and we take them as they come. We're not on a particular schedule for getting through the book, so, for example, it may take us 6 months to get through Hebrews.

I'm also away of teaching by example, for instance, modeling prayer, Bible study and worship.

There is also teaching that goes on in the give and take of discussion. The opportunities for teaching take many forms.

I think teaching should be relevant to those who are seeking teaching. For example Jesus' parables are about things that his audience could easily relate to. What are those you want to teach concerned about? Ultimately he uses his parables to bring the listeners round to his central point, which is always about something central to having an effective relationship with God.

Teaching is a gift from God. It is listed in the five-fold ministry spoken of in 1 Corinthians 12.

You will notice that teachers are listed below Apostles and Prophets.
The reason is that in order to teach, one has to have the right doctrine.
To have correct teaching, one has to be either taught the doctrine of Jesus either by the Holy Spirit directly which would make them an apostle and or prophet, so they are able to discern and correct any wrong teaching they need to be able to hear from God or they need to be taught by someone who has an apostolic and/or prophetic anointing.

Philip had to teach the Ethiopian Eunuch the basics of faith in Jesus, he then responded in faith an was baptized. Philip was a prophet who heard from the Holy Spirit.

The reason for such massive deception is that Christians who are taught by men and don't understand the voice of God or the leading of His Holy Spirit are spiritually subject to those who teach them.

Paul tells us that there is one mediator between man and God (Jesus) Christ. (1 Timothy 2:5).
If you seek Jesus wholeheartedly he will show you the truth, this is not to say that he does not use teachers to help give understanding.

May the Lord Jesus bless you and give you wisdom to discern the truth from error.

The Writer

This is a great response and gave me insight I have not had before.

I do have the gift of teaching and, I teach primarily through my writings...

It is a gift which carries a heavy responsibility to it...

RE: How do you teach?

Teaching is a piece of cake when the man up front has a gift for it.

†. Rom 12:5-8 . .We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is . . teaching, let him teach

†. 1Cor 12:4-6 . .There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all.

†. 1Cor 12:7-9 . . Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit

†. Eph 4:10-13 . . It was he who gave some to be . . teachers

All Spirit gifts are distributed solely at the sovereign discretion of God's spirit.

†. 1Cor 12:11 . . All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He gives them to each one, just as He determines.

So then, just as it is necessary to be a naturally-gifted pianist in order to do justice to Rachmaninoff's 3rd, so it is necessary to be a Spirit-gifted teacher in order to stand in for Christ and feed his sheep.

Any numbskull can follow a packaged lesson plan, but only a Spirit-gifted man can truly speak for Christ. If a teacher lacks the gift to fill in for Christ while he's out of town, then they need to sit down and shut up before they get themselves in so much hot water that it'll take a Caterpillar 416 backhoe to get them out of the hole they've dug for themselves.

†. 1Pet 4:11 . . If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God

How do you teach?
It doesn't have to be in regards to the above verse, just in general: how do you teach?

Actually I think it does have to be in regards to the above verse. You simply teach them to observe all ordinances, not only baptism, but the Lord's supper; all positive institutions, and moral duties; all obligations, both to God and men; all relative duties that respect the world, or one another, those that are without, and those that are within; and these are to be taught them, and therefore to be insisted on in the ministry of the word; and not merely in order that they may know them, and have the theory of them, but that the may put them into practice.

Also every thing that Christ has commanded and nothing else. Because Christ's ministers are not to teach for doctrines the commandments of men or enjoin that on the churches, which is of their own, or other men's devising, but rather ordered by Christ.

Teaching God's word is done in various methods. Expository teaching is done by reading a bible story and teaching on the moral of the story and how it can be applied to our life. For example we can teach a good lesson about fear by reading the story of David and Goliath. We can also teach a good lesson about having faith in God by reading the same story.

Other method of teaching is verse by verse. This one way I like to teach when it comes to doing exegesis teaching. Exegesis teaching is done verse by verse. Pick a book in the bible, start with chapter one and go to the end of the book, reading and commenting on every verse in every chapter. If a verse does not have a conclusive comment then join them the scripture before and after.

Reference teaching is one that my wife likes to use. She likes to start with a particular verse in the bible and then trace its references and see how they relate and teach about what their relation is.

My favorite method of teaching is topical. Topical teaching is when you take a particular topic of the bible and research various scriptures on a particular subject and then form a lesson concerning that particular topic. In topical teaching, you spend more time searching the word of God than you do any other method, but at the same time you are learning what the word of God says about a particular issue.

Cliff, I think teaching not as easy as you think it is. Even if a man is gifted to teach the word of God still has to be careful of what he teaches and how he teaches it.

Not being critical of your packaged lesson plan comment. But. that is how I got started. I am very thankful of the times that I spent studying those packaged lesson plans. They are very useful even to this day. Sometimes God will speak to us about something in a packaged lesson plan. I happen to be a bible teacher who writes those packaged lesson plans.

However today, I can teach the word of God straight from those pages without any outside resources, but still at times do rely on them.

God bless
Ryan
