  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do you explain Grace.

Thanks, I've been strugling with how to witness to my loved ones, as a new christian myself.

I don't want to come off sounding all "high and mighty", but I wouldn't take the sin thing too far if you know what I mean...

All they need to hear is they are broken, don't drive them away from you. Even if they have to hear it bits and pieces at a time. I screwed up when I was witnessing to my father. He is an evolutionist, and a deist. He believes there is a God that created everything, but after that he just let things go. In his particular version, God created the big bang and things were on their own from there. I told him that evolution was stupid. I said he was stupid for agreeing with it. I regret that a lot. The rest of the time we even discussed the issue in passing all he would hear is me calling him stupid. Doesn't matter how much truth I had or how much knowledge I had. If all he heard was "stupid" I was going nowhere, and that's where I went. That was over 2 years ago. My Dad is still not saved. He is coming along though. He needs prayer.

Anyway, my point is that if you condemn and accuse them you won't get anywhere. If it was me, I would just tell them what they did and that in God's eyes, and His law, it is wrong, and He is there to love and bring them back to Him.

Peace

One of the purposes of the law that God gave us is to show us who we are. God is Holy, and we are called to be like Him, lights unto this world. He gave us His law to show us what He is like. We are to be like Him, according to His law, which is who He is.

If we break the law, then we are not like Him. We have ruined the relationship between God and ourselves. If you screw up even once, it is game over on your part. All you can do is accept grace.

Here is what I would do with your family.

Take them through the 10 commandments, 1 by 1, and see which ones they have broken. Remember what Jesus clarified with the laws as well. If you think about any sexual sin, that is adultery in your heart. If you ever get angry at your brother (not physical) then that is murder. Lying is a given, and probably stealing, and coveting. Everyone's broke the Sabbath at some point. We have all disobeyed our parents at some point. Even if it is something small and stupid. If we have ever put anything before God, if we've watched tv instead of going to church, we have idolized and worshiped other gods. Everyone has made themselves a god at some point. Graven images has a lot to do with paganism, but most of us have done it at some point, if we look hard enough. We usually miss it because we don't pay much attention to it. Finally, taking the name of the LORD in vain. This goes beyond saying GD or JC. If you have taken the name of God, which would be righteousness, and made it common, as in not holy and honored, then you have taken His name in vain. If you say you are a good person, and you are not, then you have taken God's name in vain. Unless your family can stand up to this criticism here, they have used the LORD's name in vain because they are not good people who have earned their way to heaven.

Part of witnessing is showing people that they are sinners. Not condemning them, but showing them they are broken and in need of a healer. If they do not believe they are broken, why would they search out a healer?

Peace

Thanks so much, you really reminded me of some important truths, I almost wanted to print that off and show them this. I did however give them a copy of the romans road to salvation track. I also printed them a c opy of my newsletter I wrote vmy self entitle "Grace alone." they couldn't believe I could write like that. but faith does come from hearing. so It's up to God to do the rest.

How do you explain this to a family member and get them to understand?
St. Francis said " preach the gospel at all times , if necessary , use words ... "

Live the life in front of them each and every day , walk in love and forgiveness ... curiosity , will eventually , kill the cat , so to speak ..
