How do you correct red tint in old photos?

I have some scanned images of old photos that have a red tint. I asked my Aunt if they were made this way on purpose. She laughed and said, "No! They are cheap K-mart photos, and have changed over time. I've tried messing with color correction settints in my photo software. I'm using MS Digital Image Standard.

That's about as close as I could get it too. I don't know what it originally looked like. I wonder if I was wearing green pants or brown chorderroy pants. I should see if my mom has any negatives, I could have copies made from those right?

If you can't get better originals, scan them in color, then gray scale them.

The only way to color correct that is to manually go in paint in the colors. You would need a program like photoshop to do it.

Though the gray scale did come out nice!

Hi,

I don't know if this will help. Many companies will restore colors credibly. OTOH if you can get a cheap old copy of Photoshop 7 (maybe $25 on eBay) or have a friend who'll let you use his, try the following:

1. Layers > New Adjustment Layer > Curves, and in the options just above the grid choose Red. Pull down the middle of the curve and see what happens.

2. Layers > New Adjustment Layer > Hue & Saturation and play with parts of your image.

3. There are a million great Photoshop tutorials online and I'm quite sure some of them will help you with a red-biased print like this.

4. If you hire someone, be picky, price several and ask for references. And call the references.

Sorry, I'm forced to agree. I tried all the quick fixes I could think of in PS7 and it's not happening. When I got decent skin tones the shadows and lips went purple. From there it's all hand painting. Got it despotted, though, with the clone stamp. Yeah, maybe the negative has more color information.
