In all my years of being at church I have found that there is a tremendous emphasis on being godly - yet no one has bothered to tell me how to attain this elusive quality.
Can anyone help a sister out please?
Don't try to do it yourself. Let go of all self cleaning and focus on the Spirit which God gives through your baptism. By giving up on your abilities, you allow God to make you a new person. You will begin to love others more than yourself and as that love grows the desire to do wrong fades away.

There are two things that help with this. 1) Reading the word the bible to know what God thinks, then 2) communing daily with the LORD through prayer.

The bible tells us:

"Pray that you enter not into temptation, for the Spirit is willing, and the flesh weak".

As we put our focus on Jesus and pray to Him, daily, we will be strengthened in our hearts, the Holy Spirit will overcome the weaknesses of the flesh. We will become more like the LORD as we behold him.

James 4, the entire chapter is excellent. It includes:
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:7.
To me this means fearing the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom and following the Lord's commandments:
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
Psalm 111:10

Resisting the devil, to me would mean to:
.... be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Ephesians 6:10
Ephesians 6:10-18 is excellent

... And praying for guidance constantly from the Lord in the name of Jesus Christ, asking for the Holy Spirit to be bestowed upon you, and truly seeking to be Holy in all that you do which is not really what society in general teaches us so it's important to remember that:
.... know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
James 4:4

And also:
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
1 John 2:15-18

This above scripture was necessary for me to recognise the times that we are in, namely 'the last time,' and to act accordingly:
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
Ephesians 5:15-17

And cutting out media, TV, music, was a big help although it was something I struggled to refrain from consuming. I'm not saying that all media is bad (I haven't got the time to study and analyse it all) but mainstream media in general in my opinion is counterproductive to living a Holy life, it's often blasphemous against our Lord and media and society in general portray a false illusion of the world we are in, making it seem as if the most important things in life are to be successful, and fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

Learn as much of the Word of God as you can, and memorise it:
Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Revelation 3:3

Study the teachings of Jesus Christ and endeavour to walk even as he walked:
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
1 John 2:6

Recognise the subtlety of the devil when he tries to lead people astray:
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Genesis 3:1

And Satan is the God of this world:
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
2 Corinthians 4:4

Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Matthew 10:16

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Matthew 5:44

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
Proverbs 3:5

And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
Luke 10:27-28

Yes indeed, the keys to the kingdom are in the scriptures, this is the real bread of life Christ is speaking of. So, hang on to your hat because if you receive this by faith it will instantly open your eyes and give you the knowledge and understanding the scriptures speak of throughout the Bible. Everything that we see and do not see is spiritual, that is, made by God speaking it into existence including us. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle and over all the earth, ...Genesis 1:26 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them,...Genesis 1:27 Now this part is huge because it all ties in to who you really are once you open up the kingdom with the Christ's words. Christ meaning anointed, and you too are anointed once you receive his words. Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts..2 Cor.1:21 Jesus came to help clarify the scriptures for us, actually first for the Jews because they already had the scrolls which explained the spiritual system we are living in. But they were simply living by the law of Moses and the love of God, and faith was not in their hearts. Since, God is love..1 John 4:16, this is the start of godliness. To this we must also add faith! Jesus tells us over and over, it is done unto you as you believe, only believe, Have faith in God... But what is faith? Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen..Hebrew 11:1 So, faith is invisible, not seen but is the substance of things hoped for, until they are manifested then they are visible. Every time you think and speak faith is moving in the unseen! Faith in either something good, that you want or faith in something you do not want, which is fear! This is huge, you remember you were made in God's image..God said in "our" image. Who is our? Our is the Father, who is love but also the Word which is God's thought in motion or spoken. You will notice that every time Jesus did a miracle he spoke it to make it manifest. He also tells us that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. He tells us out of a man's good treasure of his heart comes good, and out of evil abundance of the heart, evil.. but also Our is Spirit, the same word was used when he breathed the breath of life into man, the word, ruach, meaning spirit. So as soon as you receive Jesus' words, which he tells us is Spirit and Life, then you are a new creation, part of the vine. A branch of the vine, Christ said.. a branch is not separated from the vine but is an integral part of the vine but if separated withers and dies on its own. Christ said believe in me, that is what he is telling us. Everything is received by faith! If you believe this, believe in his life, words and resurrection, you are connected to the vine. All of our sins fall away. You see, if attached to God, believing it, then His power is in us, we are then One, as Jesus prayed in John 17:21 He literally prayed we would be one, as he was one with the Father, all of us, One. Glory to God, isn't that wonderful? Then everything is possible, Jesus tells us all things are possible with God! This changes the entire dynamic of life! You are no longer at the mercy of life, living reactively to circumstance because Faith changes any circumstance! This is godliness, knowing you are connected to the Living God! Then. "doing" God's will becomes much easier and very exciting! It is a new world, you literally have the keys to the kingdom, loving one another becomes much easier when you realize all of humanity are spiritual beings whether they know it yet or not! Even an atheist is living in a righteous spiritual system where it is done unto you as you believe! Faith is moving no matter who you are but the lack of knowledge is what cripples mankind. So, realize what Christ is telling you... he wanted to save the world... he loved us so much he was willing to go to the cross...so he tells us to love God, and one another and to definitely have Faith in the Word of the Living God. God is with us all..receive it.. that is godliness.. only believe!
