• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I always used to assume that OCD was doing physical things obsessively (i.e. hand washing). It wasn't until recently that I learned that most people with OCD actually suffer from obsessive thoughts that are unpleasant.

Very often I suffer from unpleasant thoughts that I can't seem to get rid of. I've always just assumed that it was because I am weak, which I am, but now I'm starting to wonder if I have OCD.

How do I find out if I actually have OCD? I don't want to go see a psychologist because I probably can't afford it, and frankly I'd be too embarrassed.

If you're unwilling to try treatment, finding out whether you have it won't likely be much help. Why not be open to giving treatment a try, if need be? Some places offer free or sliding-scale care to lower-income patients.

Check out

Good luck, and God bless.

Believe me when I say I understand how very embarrassing it can be to confide what goes through your mind to someone. But also believe me when I say that psychologists have heard all kinds of bizarre things in their field. Someone who understands the nature of OCD should see it as part of the OCD itself, not a weakness in the person. I don't have the finances for a professional either, but I was diagnosed years ago when I did have insurance. Primary physicians usually don't have enough knowledge, I don't think, to diagnose as far as mental health in concerned. A specialist is really the only one who can properly diagnose you. I can't afford to go to a psychologist now, so I have been seeing a minister friend whom I have known my entire life. He isn't a licensed professional, but he is very knowledgable about mental/emotional disorders. I used to live in silence concerning my thoughts and fears, but my whole life was consumed by them. It helps so much to know that someome understands, will listen, and also help to keep me grounded. Jesus loves us so much. I used to cry out to Him for help, yet I felt hopeless. I still feel that way sometimes, but He has provided me a husband who is so compassionate, and a trusted friend with whom I can confide in. I'll pray for you to get the help you need. Try and search out your options. OCD can get really "harry" with the more responsiblities I have, so sometimes I don't function well and I need the support others can provide. This website also is a blessing. Your thoughts are no worse than others on this website, so don't beat yourself up for them. That actually can cause them to worsen if it's OCD .

Prayers,
Rebecca
