So I just learned about the Synod of Dort which took place almost 400 years ago. How in the world did the modern Church come to accept Arminiamism in it's current form even after having it examined under a microscope for 7 months and shown to be *edit* unreconcillable with the Word of God?

Arminianism never really went away , just read Wesley and Whitfields correspondence.

Also try getting hold of the works of A M Toplady..........(Rock of Ages) .....he'll knock your socks off!
I think Wesley was scared of him ;)

And lots of other great stuff! "A debtor to mercy alone" is one of my favourite hymns:

A debtor to mercy alone,
Of covenant mercy I sing;
Nor fear with thy righteousness on,
My person and offering to being.

The terrors of law and of God,
With me can have nothing to do;
My Savior's obedience and blood,
Hide all my transgressions from view.

The work which his goodness began,
The arm of his strength will complete;
His promise is, Yea and Amen,
And never was forfeited yet.

Things future, nor things that are now,
Nor all things below or above
Can make him his purpose forego,
Or sever my soul from his love.

My name from the palms of his hands
Eternity will not erase;
Impress'd on his heart it remains
In marks of indelible grace.

Yes, I to the end shall endure,
As sure as the earnest is giv'n;
More happy, but not more secure,
The glorified spirits in heav'n.

Toplady was a "patron " of Wesley and Whitfield and their missionary efforts to the unsaved as well as the spread of the Method.

As Wesley moved further and further away from traditional doctrine he and Whitfield split, the money went to Whitfield .I suspect there was some anger there more than fear

It is one of the by-products of religious liberty that we have enjoyed for the past 200-300 years. At one time, heresy was whatever a group of men decided it was, and these men forced everyone to accept that dogma on threat of excommunication, torture, or death. The Protestants were all heretics to the medevial church and to many of the crown heads of Europe. They thought that public torture would stop these "heresies", but in most cases exact opposite was the result, and the movement spread.

Since the English, French, and American Bill of Rights became law, we now enjoy relative religious liberty when it comes to beliefs. But that has opened the door to all kinds of heresies and sects and cults to flourish. Just think of all the cult movements that were born in the 1800's, but then again at the same time the gospel spread rapidly as well and there was true revival. I am thankful to be living in the era after the Bill of Rights, albeit with all the cults and heresies. Now instead of forcing others to believe as we do, we now persuade others by education and the free exchange of ideas.

I may not see either in heaven. They will both be so close to the throne of glory, that the light will blind me and I will not be able to see them from my little space of heaven, just barely there by the grace of God. :thumbsup: :preach:

I've seen that said about Wesley from some reformed guy, or a puritan maybe, when interviewed and asked if he thought he would see Wesley in heaven.
