  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I took the more bookish, nerdy route as I got older :) Cars are definitely not my thing now! But I'd so much rather learn about and talk about and think about things like science, history, philosophy, culture, anthropology, etc... than clothes, shoes, baking, hairstyles, etc. Which makes for a fairly lonely existence among other women. Can't you just imagine it?

Typical Woman: Hey Inkachu, did you see those shoes she had on?
Atypical Me: Uh, not really, I don't really pay attention to peoples' shoes. Hey, but how about that Pearl Harbor anniversary we just had on the 7th, eh? I mean, what an event in our history, right? Can you imagine what it was like for those poor people who witnessed it?"
Typical Woman: *crickets chirping*

You and I would probably make great friends, Red! Tomboys unite!

my best girl friend (husband is best friend, well God is but you know what I mean) once said that the reason we were friends is because I am not your typical girl...i grew up with the boys, I relate better to them and so does she...that was, oh, about 25-30 years ago....

I'm glad we ended up having our daughter a bit later. The things I picked up along the way have helped so much. From the very beginning, we've talked to her about most things. Almost no baby talk. So now, not only does she talk like a little adult, she expresses herself very well. Even if she's in tears and upset.
Another thing I've been working with her since the beginning (your "please!" post made me think to bring this up!) was not just saying "no", but again...explaining why. Now when she asks for something, I tell her why she can have it. And nine times out of ten, even if she's disappointed, she accepts that she can't have it and she doesn't beg. I begged a lot at that age!! I carried on until someone yelled at me to stop. lol But she almost never does it. It's amazing to me.

One thing I'm massively thankful for is being married to a teacher. My wife has been teaching her at home since go and my daughter loves learning now. And she's all about rules! She told some kids at the McD's playground the other day, "no running!" Because she read the posted rules that say "No Running"! :D

So the things you do early on will bear fruit. You will have that morally independent person as long as you give her the tools to make her own judgments. I feel like we have done that and are already seeing a morally independent little person taking shape.

I was a terror as a teenager. So I'm REALLY happy we're raising her right so she doesn't have to endure what I did.

I also have that nerd/geek thing going.

Typical Woman: Hey...there's a HUGE sale at Nordstrom's
Me: Did you watch Ascension on the SyFy channel? Oh and my DVR didn't record it all so I had to search the channel guide to find it...then I gave up and hooked my laptop to my TV using an HDMI cord on HDMI port 3 and watched it streaming from the internet...the ending was just incredible.
Typical Woman:

OR...
Me: Hey...have you seen the movie Apollo 13? They really messed the story up because it didn't happen like that. You know that scene where they're telling Tom Hanks' character that Mattingly was exposed to the measles and it's like 2 days before launch? And...they're showing the Saturn V being taken to the Launchpad? Yeah...well...that's NOT how that went down. The Saturn goes out to the launch complex about 2-3 months ahead of time for testing and check-out...
Typical Woman: :confused::doh:

PS...I won a prize at a NASA open house for being able to name the original Mercury 7 astronauts! John Glenn, Gordon Cooper, Walter (Wally) Schirra, Alan Shepard, Virgil (Gus) Grissom, Donald (Deke) Slayton and M. Scott Carpenter...

I loooove Apollo 13 :) Space stuff fascinates me!

My fam and I visited the NASA Space Center in Houston last year, it was SO cool. "Failure is not an option" is one of the best lines of all time! I still get goosebumps when Ed Harris says that line in the movie.

I used to live close to the Langley Research Center, and I've been to Kennedy. My bucket list includes visiting ALL the NASA centers....

It was funny that, out of all the places we visited around Houston, our son (12 yrs old at the time) was more enamored with the Space Center than anything else. They had this little area of hands-on exhibits for kids, and he could've stayed there all day long.

My first daughter/second child was like that. She was as cute as a button. My wife said the bad thing about her learning to speak so well was she missed out on the cute baby talk, though. At two, it was like talking to a five-year-old, and sometimes she would sit there very calmly. My wife started her out on Indonesian when we lived there, which she thought would be easier to learn. Then we moved to the US and she quickly picked up English. At barely three at a church event, my daughter sang this song, "When I was afraid, I will trust in him."
