How are traditional causes of belief reliable in acquiring knowledge?

Persuasion? "If you don't believe it you'll go to theorist hell where the stupid burns forever!"

:sorry:
Persuasion generally includes an appeal to reason.

Trying to appeal to my self-interest (the appeal to hell) wouldn't be a logical argument. At best it might only frighten me into believing it. It wouldn't be rationally established that it was true.

It was also a joke. ;)

My point is this, there are a variety of theologies that can from the bible and each one thinks they have it right. How would peer review help this, unless the ones doing the peer review, were all of the same theological ilk.

Earlier in this thread, you yourself drew a parallel with historiography. This year being the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, a few months ago there was a program on British TV in which a historian argued that for Britain not to have become involved would have had disasterous consequences. No more than two or three weeks after that, another historian, in another program, argued that it was a mistake for Britain to have become involved.

So which do you believe? The one which you think makes the more convincing case. In being able to force their practisioners to finally share a common opinion, at least for the time being, the physical sciences are the exception, rather than the rule.

So I'm still waiting on someone to explain to me how traditional causes of belief—faith, revelation, dogma, authority, charisma, conventional wisdom, the invigorating glow of subjective certainty—eliminate, rather than generate, the errors I outlined in the original post and how they can lead us to knowledge as uncontaminated as possible.

That may take some time.

Here's a fun little update to this thread. A test kitchen challenges conventional wisdom of thawing a steak before cooking it by splitting frozen steaks into control and experimental groups. Even in the area of food does it do us well to implement epistemologies that embody skeptical inquiry and ingenuous workarounds than simply doing things the way we've always done it unquestioningly because that's tradition.

If You Thaw Your Steaks Before Cooking, You're Doing It Wrong

Very interesting. Thanks.
