Maybe we should forbid them to use the "P" word, while we get to use it with each other publicly as a term of endearmentWell, that does include the insulting term, "Protestant" devised by Roman Catholics as a pejorative slur during the Reformation.

"Pope Benedict XVI is offering relief from purgatory to Roman Catholics who travel to Lourdes over the next year, the Vatican said yesterday.

Pilgrims to the shrine in south-west France will receive "plenary indulgences" from the Pontiff, which the Church says reduce the time spent being "washed" of sin after death. The indulgences will be available from this weekend until Dec 8, 2008.
The Church teaches that people who do not go directly to heaven must spend time in purgatory, where they can be purified of residual sin.
It is the latest initiative to get more pilgrims to the shrine, famous for the reported healing properties of its water. In August the Vatican opened an airline service offering pilgrims direct flights from Rome to Lourdes.
For those who cannot make the journey to France, the Pope will also grant indulgences to Catholics who pray at places of worship dedicated to the Madonna of Lourdes from Feb 2 to Feb 11. Indulgences may also be granted under special circumstances to people too sick to visit the shrine, the Vatican said.
The offer comes as the shrine prepares to commemorate the 150th anniversary of when the Madonna was said to have appeared to a peasant girl in 1858.
The Pope is expected to visit next year, possibly in September or October."
How can the Pope offer relief from purgatory if you travel to Lourdes over the next year? How is this possible?
I'm going to be totally honest here. In my 45 years on this planet, I have never heard that the word "protestant" is derogatory. I've listened to radio shows (like the Bible Answer Man) and they use this word to describe themselves. If you look the word up in a dictionary, you will not see it referred to as "offensive". However, on the other hand, here are three sources that describe the word "Romanism" as offensive:does intent matter?
We know darn well that "protestant" is used quite often as an intended slam.
Does how the recipient take it matter?
Personally, I find the case when they use it as a slam a badge of honor, but I know it bothers some people.
Yep - more of the same - thinking that doing this or that can compensate for sin and ignoring the Lord's death and resurrection as the only means to do that . No focus on the Lord at all . Only a focus on a dead human woman and a live human male thinking he is something more than what he is .
But, I'll tell you what: If YOU think the word is offensive, I give my word that I will not use it anymore. I do not want to be accused of not practicing what I preach. However, I do not know what I SHOULD call you. If I call you Christian - well, I'm a Christian too. I do not like the seperating effect of calling you guys Christian while I am called Catholic. This infers that, somehow, I am not Christian. I am going to use the often used term "Seperated Brethren". Is that acceptable?
Actualy, it doesn't matter that much if we can bother to be friendly about it, but that would require the ability to laugh at ourselves & not take it all too seriously.
I don't wanna know what you would use for an icon for me!Rickottostant?
Please read this link: Perhaps it will give a clearer view on the actual Catholic position:
Uh, yah: Thats what I meant. If people want to debate what the Church teaches, first they must know what it is the Church actually DOES teach.I don't wanna know what you would use for an icon for me!![]()
Terry, the problem is that it will give the Catholic view on the Catholic position.![]()
