Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any information and/or could provide any good sources for an understanding of the history of the Creationist standpoint, i.e. how prevalent it's been at different stages of church development, who it's major proponents were, etc.

It has been prevalent from the time of Adam and Eve, and its greatest proponent was Moses, who wrote it all down from God's inspiration.

Well it's difficult to trace the history of a perspective that, until a hundred years or so ago, was pretty much taken for granted by just about everyone in the west.

I'd have to agree with Anoetos. It is hard to determine when the creationist standpoint began. The modern movement probably began to combat the Theory of Evolution. James Ussher wrote the Annals of the World way back in 1650a.d., but like Anoetos said, it was simply taken for granted as a truth in Europe probably since the inception of the Holy Roman Empire.

There was a 'holy roman empire'?

It just seems to me that they wouldn't have been involved in any part of Jesus' death if they were a holy empire. That is, of course, assuming that your use of the word 'holy' is in a biblical sense.

I'm referring to the Holy Roman Empire which reigned from 962 to 1806a.d. Which is why we have the Pope and the Vatican located in Rome, Italy.
Not the Ancient Pagan Roman Empire of Jesus' day which reigned from sometime before Christ, some say 27b.c. - 393a.d.

I'm referring to the Holy Roman Empire which reigned from 962 to 1806a.d. Which is why we have the Pope and the Vatican located in Rome, Italy.

The Bishop of Rome is in Rome, Italy because that's where the Roman See has always been. The same reason the Bishops of Jerusalem, Vienna or Antioch have been in their respective locales, that is the location of their episcopal sees.

The Holy Roman Empire was the attempt to bring Roman civilization back into Western Empire after much squabbling between the various Germanic kings and kingdoms and the failures of the Emperor in Constantinople to reclaim the West. Thus the Pope crowned Charlemagne Emperor of the Romans. It also so happens that after Charlemagne's death his empire was divided between his sons. Ultimately the result was the development of the Kingdom of France and the Elective Monarchy of the German States which the HRE evolved into; and which were unified in the 19th century as Germany.

Creationism (with the 'ism') I think is a response to the theory of evolution.

I think it is more appropriate to try and understand when the theory of evolution and the creation narratives of Genesis were thought to be opposed...The reason I say this is that there's evidence of theories of evolution dating back to pre-Socratic times, and incorporated into Christianity in the Middle Ages. Augustine of Hippo had ideas about evolution.

What your looking for is broad, please be more specific.
