Hiding Icons

Why do you hide age, gender, faith, country, political party, or marital status icons?

I hide the age one because I don't think my age is important to discussions I have here. I don't want to be pre-judged based on my age (though I give it if asked) and when I have discussions with someone offline, they don't know my age unless I tell them (or are family). I'm not hiding a political party icon. I just don't have a party (or Independent) selected. I don't have to choose one in Wisconsin and I'm not choosing one here.

SINCE THIS WAS INSPIRED BY ME,I think I should dignify this with a response.

I'm having real issues with being American right now, as well as a denomination/faith at all right now. Serious, serious issues. This all plays into my political party, of course.

Ironically my age is still there, I felt it was relevant. I may put my gender on there soon enough, but I want some guy to hit on me for the lulz first.

You were the most recent person I've seen without some icons, so I suppose you did inspire it. Though I've seen a few people hide icons since Edit Options came back up.

I edited everything the other day because I'm not sure how often I'm going to be on anyway. And then I started getting PM's by someone I didn't want to have contact with so I shut off my PM's and Visitor board to anyone who is not a friend. I also turned off reps. That's why I did.

The only one I don't have is "political party", since I don't have a particular party that I support.

I always think prejudging based on age is funny. Somehow, it is almost always done by people who have their own age hidden.

I usually assume they are 12 year olds.

Age: Well, I hid that just for the giggles.
Gender: I have that shown...although if I make it disappear, I bet people would still know I'm a female simply because of my username.
Faith: Have that showing too.
Country: I figure it'd be nice if people knew which continent I'm on, ya know? I've had people think I was from Britain, Australia, and even China. (Britain and Australia; probably because I spell 'colours' and 'favourites'...China; I have no clue why someone would think I'm Chinese. )
Political Party: I'm not into politics, so that answers it right there.
Martial Status: Hmmm...well, I'm posting in the singles...that oughta give people a clue. If or when I'm married, you'll know when I suddenly disappear.

I'd rather people make assumptions based on the content of the post than the little icons displayed.

I also turned off various things due to various issues.

Thinking about it, I'm not sure why I hide my age, since I'm quite open in threads about it. The last time I had my age showing was because a male CFer (well, former CFer at this point) around 21 was interested in me and I wanted him to see how old I was. He stopped being interested real quick.

I think I'll show my age (for now, I'll probably change my mind) and take down my flag instead. I'm not a flag waver as it is. I can't see myself ever hiding my gender icon. I am woman, hear me roar.

I always wonder about the ones who don't show their age. It's like they have something to hide

I think the only think I have turned off is political party- I don't give a flip and it's more likely that if I say something stupid I will get a "you must be a Republican!" or "You must be a Democrat!" if I have it there

What I have issues with is someone not showing their country. We have so many nations represented on the board that it's hard to remember a poster's country if it isn't displayed.

I hide the religious icon because I don't find it particularly important for those to discuss religion with me to know my opinions at first. Discuss with me because I am a human being first and foremost and if no one can and they need some icon to know how to discuss, then don't even discuss with me.

I would rather have someone engage the topic with me before getting to know. I did however conced to the fact that people could get the wrong impression so its on them to check my profile to get a clearer idea if they are confused.

Political party because my views are constantly evolving and changing as time progresses. I am a registered Democrat but I am seriously considering voting Green Party of Socialist Party in 2012. Haven't decided which yet. So with that in mind, it is better to just hide it.

The country I have it hidden because I forgot to turn it back to unhidden.

As one socialist to another, good job throwing your vote away. Third parties are nothing and won't be anything for a long, long time. And then they would be a first or second party.

That is precisely my issue.
Sure I would love to vote for and stand by a party that will be active in my country but 3rd parties will never be a relevent aspect of our government anytime soon. Voting for the closest candidates that I can stand by, if I am going to vote makes the most sense, hence why I am a registered Democrat.

Another reason why I hide my political party. As time goes and I feel more like I can be more supportative fully for the Democrat party than just being a registered Democrat, I may unhide it.

As someone finding it extremely difficult to even get a work visa to be allowed to stay in the US...can you hand me over your citizenship? I'll teach you a few words in a language you'll never use in exchange.
