• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I think I figured it out. If one has any musical training and the song you're dancing to is in common (4/4) time, you "miss" a beat:

Slow-slow-quick-quick is "one-two-three-and". I think people look for the fourth beat.

But true, moving faster does cover mistakes and/ or you can recover more quickly.

We now resume regular programming...

its easier to cover up mistakes when moving fast.
That's one probable answer. My dance teacher is a former world champion in swing, but he says that waltz is a struggle for him. Of course, he looks fantastic when he waltzes, so the word "struggle" is relative.

I am much better at swings and latins than smooth dances. I think part of it is the speed, but the bulk of the difference is the rhythm. A swing dance has clearly defined points in the move that let you "recover." If you get off balance in a West Coast turn, you know that there's an anchor step no more than 6 beats away. An East coast move has a rock step every 8 beats. Those places let you recover your bearings. Smooth dances like Waltz and FT (lesser extent) just flow from point to point w/o recovery points.

It depends on the step, too. I can do a Waltz twinkle all day long - it has places where you stop and turn - recovery points. A silver waltz left turning box will wipe me out in three repeats because the mistakes pile up.

Ok, my partner's right - I've become a dance snob! :)
