Newsflash. We HAVE an alternative fuel available to us TODAY. It's called E85 Fuel (Link provided: FAQ). It's 85% Ethanol and 15% typical gasoline. As some already know, ethanol can be produced from corn, though it can be produced from "...other grain products, although in the future it may be economically produced from other biomass resources such as agricultural and forestry wastes or specially grown energy crops" Not to mention it can significantly reduce our dependence on oil, possibly eliminating our need to import it. Presently, E85 is about the same price, or slightly lower than unleaded gas. It should be possible, though, to create a sufficient supply of it (it's a renewable resource) such that it drops in price to the $1.00 level. The problem is that until gas stations see a specific demand for this product, they won't carry it. And right now it can be very difficult to find.Certain countries control the oil prices, as such our governments need/should find alternatives, such as bio-diesel, in portugal right now there are 2000 farmers producing bio-diosel, the world has great resources to max produce bio-fuels, even afghanistan could become one instead of producing drugs as they currently do, then theres all other tropical african countries who have the weather for these type of thing.
There are even cars on the road today, called "flex-fuel vehicles" (FFV's), that can use E85, and they've been in production for eight or more years (depending on car manufacturer). All vehicles for sale in this country could offered as flex-fuel vehicles in as little as one full production year. Unfortunately, because oil cartels (both OPEC and families like the Bush's) run this country, you won't see this getting big enough to make a difference anytime soon.
