Part of the Christian walk is helping others. But helping others what? What are we assisting people to do?

Anything from helping that elderly lady across to the street to providing food for the hungry and anything in between.
It should be where our heart is at, followed by actions.
Blessings to you.

Jesus said
Matthew 25:40 "'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me"

If you see a need in others that you have the ability to fill then it is your obligation to fill that need in the name of God.

Our gifts generally allow us to see a deficit in the areas that we have been blessed while others can not.

There are no general rules other than the Lord loves a cheerful giver.

What ever you do has to be motivated by Godly type Love (unconditional/selfless), so what is God's Love motivating you to do for other (do not jump into being a missionary in Afganastan, try something you can do today easily and let your faith and Love grow.

does that mean we can chastise homeless people for not getting a job? Because I would seriously kick my own butt if I wasn't willing to be self-sufficient and be a bum. Is there love in rebuking?

Dear generalbreadbasket. The 2 Comandments, which Jesus gave us and on which hang all the Law and the Prophets: Love God with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our minds. 2nd. love our neighbour as ourselves. Helping others is an important Commandment, but unless we do so out of love for God and each other, it will only give us a good feeling, and Jesus told us that is our reward on Earth, people will see our kindness and praise us for it. If we help and are beneficial from a loving and caring heart, God will know and approve, and give us His Blessings as well. To help others comes quite naturally to a loving person, and it is always without conditions, freely given. I say this with love. Greetings from Emmy, sister in Christ.

i think you'd have to know the homeless person pretty well before doing that - most aren't there just because they 'can't be bothered'!!
Certainly encouraging someone to reach their potential is helping, but judgemental 'chastising' doesn't help.
