• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

PP, you often post intersting articles, but they are just too long. I don't think most people have time to read all of them.

Also, I can't speak for everybody, but I am more apt to read something if it was actually written by the poster. Anybody can use cut and paste to present somebody else's ideas as their own, but if you write your feelings and then use that text as evidence, I think people would be more ready to read and respond. (Just don't spend a long time writing something unless your sure people will read it. It's frustarating spending a long time composing something and seeing it sink to the bottom of the forum list because it's just too long.)

With all honesty, I don't do the latter because I'm afraid I would make everyone in OBOB cry :D .

I post those articles frankly because I know some people are not aware of them, and hey, when someone (like a Pope) makes his point masterfully, who am I to think I could do better? ;)

Good critique though Dream.

PP I'd love to read some of the ency..... thingies that you include in some discussions, but I freely admit that I gloss over alot of them. Why?

1. Too much information. When confronted with a 6 inch block of text my eyes cross. Try putting more spaces in it, then it doesn't look so daunting.

2. Language. Please use basic english if at all possible. Whilst I love learning new and wonderful words I do try to limit how many I learn in a single sentence.

3. Time. The later it is the less coherent I become so it gets harder to absorb all the information.

4. Time (2) If I jump on for a quick check-up, it's hard to take the time to truly study the long posts.

5. Trolls. Love them or hate them they do become a nuisance when they keep going over the same ground, and I find myself reading the same information rewritten in 15 different times.

6. Catalan. My google translator doesn't convert Catalan very well at all. I blush at the direct language I have encountered indirectly!! (hee hee hee)

Points well taken. :)

Even though I am sure I go overboard myself, a paragraph or two or three is usually a good length to limit oneself to for a single post in a thread. The chance of getting read often varies inversely with the length.

Also, when posting encyclicals or outside links, it is always a good idea to summarize the major points being offered in the encyclical and then post the link for those who are the most keen to do a lot of reading. That way people can respond to either what you have written or what you have read.

Also, remember that OBOB is very fast paced compared to many other forums. Threads sink out of sight here rather fast. While this is a good thing, it sometimes isn't really easy to carry on a long in-depth discussion in the OBOB environment. There is just too much happening here.

Does this have to do with my Sign post? :D

Not at all good friend. But it does have to do with my weakness lately wanting to discuss the theology behind the Smurfs. When that happens, you know you need some coffee and more stimulation.

The Smurfs are very patriarchal. Wait...I'm not going there.

Very true, but a big part about communications is tailoring the message to the proper audience. Reading an article about Eucharist written by the Pope will be much different if it is intended for a Catholic audience than a Protestant audience.

But your point is well taken.

Coffee does sound good, but I need to head to bed.

Back to the original question: I don't always read big long things that are posted, but if it seems like really good info, and I have time, I do. If not, I don't. It was through a couple of links that were in OBOB, that lead to long reads, that got my search started way back when.

I also look at the source of the post or link. There are some posters, that I barely read what they type, let alone what they link to, or paste... um no one in this thread. :)

Que pasa aqui? Yo comprendo espagnol un poquito solamente! :( :D

As for the subject of the thread, well, short but concise threads are my favourites! Yes, with links to back some of them up (where necessary). Doesn't mean I'll read them immediately, but eventually. I don't always have the time... I take the time later. :)
