  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

My name is PP, and I am an OBOBer...(applause). Like you, I suffer from a desire to raise the bar so to speak on the quality of threads at OBOB. I would like to take suggestions as to how/what we can do to raise the discussion level. For instance, what can I do to get some of you to read an encyclical and not skip over it and continue with the same rhetoric? Would you like the poster to "trim" their references to meet the specific question? Would some of us possibly pledge to read through the materials presented?

I would be interested in what you would like to share here, and what type of discussions would one take part in. I ask this because lately some of the threads here have been outrageous IMO rather than food for thought.

PP,

I have noticed a LOT of that, myself.

I always read what you post, though. :)

I suggest some threads on spirituality. I find (in my experience) that often problems I have with theology are more in the soul than in the mind...is it any mistake that virtually all the Church Fathers, these giants in the faith, were also great saints?

In my opinion, great knowledge without great sanctity only brings about pride and a soul that is about to fall like a star from heaven. Charity edifies, knowledge puffs up.

I think a great couple of threads would be on the topic of how we could improve our prayer lives, and walk in the path of increasing holiness. We are all friends and brothers and sisters, surely we all need the support of prayers, and loving advice, and the knowledge of different kinds of spirituality (like the Sacred Heart, Rosary, Eucharistic Adoration, Gregorian Chant, Liturgies, etc.) I think it would also be a nice bridge to some over denominations who also have liturgies, practice the Rosary, etc.

Just my 0.02. :)

I personally wish there was a subforum within the OBOB forum where you could debate Catholic Doctrine. A good chance to possibly prove the Catholic Doctrine be the true one(at least to those here at CF)? And have strict rules, anyone not being polite gets the boot! :)
do you think you would last in there?

Of course you do. We also wish we could debate Protestants in their fora as well. However, the last time this was attempted it was closed for a good reason. Besides, since we came before you, I think you would have the burden of proof, not us.

I beg to differ ;). I follow the original teachings of the Apostles, so I can fairly say that I am following the original church and teachings. :) But, thats a debate within itself...hahah. Oh btw if you dont know already, I dont believe myself to be a protestant in the matter of "protesting against the Catholic Church several hundred years ago". I niether belong to a protestant denomination nor do I follow protestant teachings from a protestant denom, and if I do, well thats just by mere chance.

I just wonder however, who your authority on Earth is, after all, if you are the sole interpreter of the truth, then you are suggesting that everyone must agree with you or be incorrect. In other words, that God and you are never in disaccord.

Its interesting to me, considering that the Apostles had followers who had followers, and their followers had followers, how one can disregard history so blatantly and all the while believe that secular history is almost on a par with Sacred Scripture. Most men in today's age raise a toast to Lincoln but deny the existance of Rome.

Well, I have multiple people in helping me interpet, especially the Holy Spirit who guides me as scripture states. My authority would have to be my Pastor(though not the authority of the Apostles), he is the Shepard of the Flock. He helps guide and teach us(the congregation of our church). I will state this, I am not always right, and I have to constantly test my interpetations at this young state of faith in order to know if my interpetations are indeed correct.

***Moderator Note***

Look, I don't mean to be a killjoy here. And I realize how enticing it is to have Catholic/non-Catholic debates. Actually, I'm not opposed to it. However, like it or not, it is simply agianst the forum rules. Crispie is not allowed to debate in here. So, please, let's not entice him into it, okay . . . please?

Crispie, please, I am asking you . . . for the last time . . . please disengage from debate in here.

I am not debating? For one thing, I am learning more about Catholicism, and people here are learning about me and how I practice Christianity. Do not worry, nothing of the sort is happening.
Crispy,

Unfortunately, it isn't your call. The forum moderators decide these things. You are walking precariously close to a line you have already crossed recently. Please heed this friendly advice.

May I at least see how I am debating?

2) Those with disagreements or issues about Catholic faith and doctrine are asked to post respectfully and politely; you may "agree to disagree", but you may not disparage, denigrate, or libel Catholicism, nor may you post links to anti-Catholic sites, pictures, etc. Die-hard anti-Catholics are firmly asked to take such material elsewhere; this is a discussion forum, not a debate forum. Feel free to ask questions; but do not slam Catholics, Catholicism, or the Catholic Church.

Arent I allowed to politely agree to disagree, and share my beliefs in here in a respectul manner, and able to question why a Catholic may believe what he believes? I am confused as to why I am close to breaking the rules, I thought I was following them just fine...:(

PP I'd love to read some of the ency..... thingies that you include in some discussions, but I freely admit that I gloss over alot of them. Why?

1. Too much information. When confronted with a 6 inch block of text my eyes cross. Try putting more spaces in it, then it doesn't look so daunting.

2. Language. Please use basic english if at all possible. Whilst I love learning new and wonderful words I do try to limit how many I learn in a single sentence.

3. Time. The later it is the less coherent I become so it gets harder to absorb all the information.

4. Time (2) If I jump on for a quick check-up, it's hard to take the time to truly study the long posts.

5. Trolls. Love them or hate them they do become a nuisance when they keep going over the same ground, and I find myself reading the same information rewritten in 15 different times.

6. Catalan. My google translator doesn't convert Catalan very well at all. I blush at the direct language I have encountered indirectly!! (hee hee hee)
