• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have a daughter who rips her hair out. She has a bald spot like a 50 year old man. I know that pulling and cutting are closly related.

Can anyone tell me please what I can do to help encourage her to stop?

how old is she (if u dont mind)? and does she want to stop?

1st thing is take care of urself, make sure u r ok. dont let it be so that she can manipulate u with it (not sayin she does but it is a possibility) educate urself (there r plenty of resources on the net)... then u will honestly be able to say 'i understand'

talk to her... not too pushy, not encouraging what she is doing, just listen... if she isnt talking (at all) then maybe ask her how she is going, does she know why, does she know the dangers (if she doesnt maybe try to tell her a little or tell her where she can find out for herself... because that she does need to know) but dont push any of it if she cant or wont answer leave it... it will still leave her with something to think about, wether she ever tells u the answers or not, she will know u care

I posted some links in your other thread in the anxiety section. I hope they will help to give you a starting place for information. I do not have issues with trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling) but I had and mostly recovered from a somewhat similar condition called dermatillomania.

Here's another link I just found:

She is 9. I meant to put that in the first post, sorry.

I am sure she wants to stop, but she doesn't know how. We have been to counseling, we have been to doctors, we have trieds meds, nothing. I really am at wits end on what to do. I was really hoping I could find someone here she would think was "cool" to talk to her.

Being a teenager who has done similar things.dont get mad at her.dont shout and her telling her to stop.thats what my mum and dad did.it just made me feel worse.

Talk to her camly be more like a friend.tell her you love her and how she can try other things than doing that.

see if you can get her to talk to a youth leader or someone close.

Hope that helps
