I'm moving down to Portland from Seattle. This is going to happen at the end of this month.
I have some family down there and a couple of friends but am looking for ...
I don't know. Input. I know about Powells but not about chinese food. I know about the Pearl but nothing about affordable neighborhoods.

Any and all input and prayer is welcomed and requested.

Thanks!
-Honor

Hey there. I just moved here in July.

Affordable neighborhoods aren't too hard to find. I live in the north east. You probably know that the city is broken up into quadrants (NE, SE, SW, NW). The rule of thumb is, the farther away you are from downtown, the less expensive life is. Stay away from SE 82nd and Division.

The best Chinese food I have had was in West Linn, about a mile past Marylhurst college.

There's lots of good Chinese food (and Japanese, and Thai, and Vietnamese, etc.). Where are you living now?

Feel free to ask any specific questions, now that I'm subscribed I'll be able to answer right away. I've lived in Portland most of my life :)

Absolutely, the best Chinese ever! It's called Ying Bun. mmm The owners are nice and the waitress is a Christian (I think the owners are too). :)

Welcome to Portland!

Here are a few of my personal favorites...

Stumptown Coffee

The Albina Press- The head barista, Billy, is #2 in the nation (it's that good)

Bai Yok (Thai)- 150 NE 82nd Ave

The Bipartisan Cafe- Several of my friends work here; good coffee, wi-fi, live music.

Ya Hala -Best lebanese food I have ever had.

By the way, the above three locations are in one neighborhood, Montivilla/Northeast Tabor. Good neighborhood (it's where I live) home prices haven't risen as high as they have closer to the river, and a lot of good businesses have started moving in.

Never go to the follow places:

Econolodge on MLK and Columbia-It's similar to the Bate's motel and I am pretty sure that one guy who used to work there comes into people's rooms...

Chang's Mongolian Grill on 122nd-The others are good, the best one is on Jantzen Beach in North Portland, but the 122nd one doesn't seem to listen if you tell them you have allergies and MUST have your food separate...and if you happen to get sick in their bathroom and break out in hives, they ask you to leave for causing a disturbance.

Tacobell on 52nd and Sandy- Evil. Will 'accidentally' forget change and such.

Jack in the Box on 60th and Sandy after dark-they leave mayo out and you will be sick. Or order plain fries, nothing with mayo EVER.

Places to go:

Annie's Donuts- 72nd and Sandy/Fremont across from the Safeway. Absolutely amazing food.

Izzy's 102nd- Very great waiting staff. A lot of good people go there and if you're into chatting, it'd be a good place.

82nd and Holgate Chinese Buffet- ABSOLUTELY amazing. It's $14 per plate but it's angelic food.

If you have pets, whatever you do, never shop from Scamp's in Lloyd. I've been trying to get them closed for abuse to the pets and dead animals.

Hope that helps. I know it's a bit late.

I actually don't mind it too much, maybe just because the one on Powell and...260th? is way, way worse. I've never not had my food burned there.

I've never been there, but there's another Chinese restaurant at NE 82nd & Tillamook that's really great. Classic cheap, badly decorated hole-in-the-wall that gives you a ton of really great, really hot food.

So true :(

I used to work at Alley Cat in Vancouver Mall. They're a great place to go.

I went there once, I used to live about 10 blocks from it. I went there because I was hungry and it was like Thanksgiving or Christmas or something, and they were open. They gave me this FOUL yellow sauce, I don't know what it was. The rest of the stuff was amazing though.

Chinese mustard isn't bad...it was some sort of...yellow sauce. It was supposed to be salty, but it wasn't. It kind of tasted like chicken fat? I don't remember all that well, but it was like nothing I had ever seen before.

Every try Zhien Hong (sp?) on 53rd and Sandy? They make some tasty food.

I have no idea what that yellow sauce would have been, I've never had it.

Thien Hong is good too, though they've gotten too popular, and they're now always crowded.

That's the place with the really good rice. That's on 57th.

There is a little place that gets hardly any business, it's on 53rdish, between 53rd and 54th, and it's name is extremely similar, but I am pretty sure it is Zhien Hong. They have very tasty General Tso's Chicken and House Special Fried Rice.
