  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Wiccanchild, why then do many faiths argue that if you don't believe in their particular way you'll go to Hell? It seems a bit too common to be just a by-product. They could have just said: If you don't believe, you don't get chocolate/eternal life. Or something along those llines.

Would it really be so bad to be force-fed delectable, scrumptious, ripe red grapes for eternity?

Because they don't. Of those religions which have a concept of 'Hell', it is not a place where you go because of your beliefs. That's mostly an Abrahamic concept.

It seems a bit too common to be just a by-product.
True, but there are many cultural things that seem suspiciously common. This points to a cause in the human condition (in this case, the appeal of objective justice), not to the veracity of the claim.

They could have just said: If you don't believe, you don't get chocolate/eternal life. Or something along those llines.
They could have, but that doesn't have the same impact as "You'll burn forever and ever! MWAHAHAHAHAAAA!", does it?

Would it really be so bad to be force-fed delectable, scrumptious, ripe red grapes for eternity?
Yes. I get sick of grapes after about four. Your Heaven is my Hell ;).

I'd find that annoying! After the first few hours or so, it would be like Chinese water torture that never ends. What if I want to do something else?

Hel, or Helheim, was not really the equivalent of the Christian Hell. There are thought to be various realms within it, ranging from pleasant or neutral for most people, to the darkest and the worst for murderers and oath breakers.

Valhalla, Odin's hall of the slain, was indeed reserved for those who died in battle, but it wasn't the only decent afterlife. You could go to the better parts of Helheim, as mentioned before, or even the hall of another deity you were devoted to. ... (I *think* it's possible to be united with Odin if you were devoted to him in some other way [or had better be,] but maybe not hang out with the guys at Valhalla.) :o
Just a little addendum: only half of the battle-slain went to Odin's hall - the other half went to Folkwang, Freyja's place.

Doesn't all order come from chaos? And all chaos from order? It just a big circle of 'ness'.
There's just stuff. We can say that some stuff is 'ordered', some is 'chaotic', but we have to remember that these are arbitrary distinctions. Try not to pay too much attention to the fine details :p.

If in almost every religion, it is clearly pointed out that if you don't follow their path, you're going to 'hell' (if you will). So, it doesn't really matter, everyone's going to 'hell' anyway.
Not that I believe in hell, I'm just pointing it out.
Views?

There is absolutely no proof such a place logically and rationally exists. Therefore such an idea or concept should be rejected by any educated intelligent adult.

Perhaps the horrific images of people being tormented for eternity in medieval paintings is proof enough, e.g.

Hortus_Deliciarum_-_Hell.jpg

My Hell may be someone's idea of bliss, and vice versa.
Has no one noticed the incredible irony in this painting?

Everyone is smiling.

Hmmmmmm.

I may be tormented, possibly endlessly in some type of Hellfire. Just burning burning burning burning burning burning burning screaming screaming screaming screaming burning screaming burning screaming burning screaming burning screaming burning screaming burning burning screaming burning burning burning burning screaming screaming burning screaming burning. screaming burning screaming burning screaming burning screaming burning screaming. That's just the way it goes,
But it doesn't have to be that way. Believe that Jesus died on the cross for you. Accept Him as your Saviour and Lord. Put your faith in Him and follow Him. You will never have to fear hell again.

"Hell" was used as a kind of motivator to encourage people to fear and I think for the most part this motivator no longer is a viable one.. People have been able to create their own hells today that would be far more hellish than anything conceived by the medieval mind.

Hell though in my view is more like being alienated from God in whatever manner that is for each person..Another way of looking at it is "consider love and union as delectable paradise, and count annoyance and hostility as the torment of hell-fire." You know what hostility and divisiveness feels like in this world..that can give you a sense of what "hell" is ...

franklin,
It depends what you consider 'hell'. Is it a physical place, or a feeling/thought?

Use a little common sense and it will kill such concepts immediately. There is no such thing as hell or heaven. It's all myth.
