Hey brother,
I appreciate your views. The only reason I can't except this view is that if God didn't want anyone to end up in this "hell of eternal torment" then no one would go there. Remeber, God is in charge of all, He makes the choices over His creation. When God created the world and set up what would happen to unbelievers, He could have choosen "death/perishing/Second Death" or Eternal Torment, since you even understand that God would never torment anyone and would not have them go there, then He would set it up for unbelievers to perish, not to be tormented for ever. This compliments my Heavenly Father's nature and matches with His Word.

God Bless

Sadly, there are those who will be cast into the lake of fire, those whose name is not written in the Lambs book of life. Is your name written in that Book?

sorry Jerrysch i seem to have misunderstood you

i'm trying to say amongst other things that the word hell is a bad translation of the original hebrew word sheol and greek word hades and that gehenna and lake of fire are not places of eternal torture

are you saying i am wrong in this?

i agree that

Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

but i dont agree that this lake of fire constitutes eternal torture.

I have found that the terms "heaven and hell" really aren't what I had been taught in days gone by.

Revelation 21: 1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.

Here we are told that ther will be a new heaven... so when a redeemed person dies, today, the best description of stating where he "goes" is to say that he goes to be with the Lord. In the OT this place was not referred to as heaven, you see what I am saying, it is safer and more accurate to say that the redeemed are with the Lord, where ever He is they will be. As to those who are unredeemed, those whose name is not written in the Lambs book of life, well Rev, 20 speaks of what is awaiting them, does it not?

I get the impression that you consider this "stay" to be temporal in nature? I would be interested in where the scripture states that those who are cast into the lake of fire find some sort of redemption from it. I don't mean inferances, I mean clear statements to the effect.

There is no doubt that when we consider a person being eternally lost, it causes us to shutter. I think we just cannot understand the magnitute of sin. We just cannot understand how serious it really is! I mean all the misery which we endure in this world is a result of sin. And we sometimes forget that our God is a Holy God, that He cannot wink at sin, becasue He is Holy and Righteous, the penalty for sin must be paid. Now it doesn't seem fare that some of us "make it" while others do not, well, by the Grace of God, and only by the Grace of God, He has saved some of us. Those of us who are saved will be an eternal witness to the mercy and grace of God while those who are not saved will be an eternal witness to the Holy and righteous nature of our God. And make no mistake.... we all by our works deserve to be in the lake of fire for all eternity.... all of us...Yet God in His wisdom and mercy chose those whom He gave to Jesus to save, and of those who were given Jesus will loose not one!!! (Jn. 6).

I have said much, I will allow you to respond now.

Jerry i get the idea that you think the lake of fire is a place of eternal torment

do you have any verses that back this up?

some of the reasons i dont think the lake of fire is a place of eternal torment is the many verses that indicate an afterwards

like this sort of thing

Eze 33:11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

if He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked why would He torture them

or this verse

1Ti 4:10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

so these verses and many like them seem to totally go against this teaching of eternal torment.

and i haven't seen any teaching to convince me otherwise since God set me free from this "hell" deception

also i have some years experience with God now and He has graciously revealed to me that He is Love ..now i ask you Jerry would Love torture anyone forever and ever ??

i concede that Love will punish, correct chastise even scourge etc

Heb 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

but i dont see anywhere in the bible anything that supports eternal torment

in fact i consider it a horrible insult to God

if you said i would torture or torment anyone knowingly and willingly for even 5 minutes i would consider you very slanderous and want this slander stopped!

and yet people try to tell me God will torture people who have never even heard of Jesus for an eternity ..it's deception to me !!

as i keep saying it is His mercy that endures forever

well i hope you see what i mean Jerry

Rom 11:32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
Rom 11:33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

i read these verses then think well people are telling me His ways are found out He's going to torture everyone forever but these verses don't agree with that !

then when i look up the original greek and hebrew words for hell i find it is an invention of man or worse the adversary.

well i hold to the Truth

His mercy endures forever !

I don't think he was, but you are. Eternal Life only goes to those who believe. People who believe "eternal torment" are saying that everyone has eternal life (the unbelievers lives will suck, but it will still be eternal if they never die).

If a place of eternal torment were real, would that truly be fair? Would that truly make God just? For instance, there have been a couple of murderers on Death Row who will accept Christ before they die, and there will be people who live very good moral loving lives like Ghandi but do not accept Christ. So you are saying it is fair for that person like Ghandi to be tortured for ever because of one choice he didn't make?

People who teach eternal torment also don't realize the fact that Eternal Life is a free gift. Let me say it again, it's a GIFT. You see, we did not choose to be born into sin, Adam made that choice for us. So is it fair that God would torment people for ever for a choice they did not make? No (That would be like punishing the victim of a crime, or punishing someone for the way they were born, something they had no choice over), and it's quite the opposite. He sent His Son to reedem who ever chooses to accept Him back to Eternal Life and Paradise, and those who don't will miss out on all the greatness and glory God has to offer in Eternal Life. Yes, it is true that none of us deserve Eternal Life, it is a free gift from God out of His mercy, but also no one deserves eternal torment. If anyone deserves it, it would be satan, and only satan. But even the OT prophesizes satan being reduced to ashes in the end times (that's how merciful and compassionate God really is). I don't think anything anyone could do in this life could constitute eternal torment. God has always been just with "an eye for an eye" so why would He not be just on an issue so large as this one?

The scriptures clearly beyone a doubt show the Lake of Fire to be a place where the unbelievers and evil will perish, cease to exist, be reduced to ashes, face the Second Death. This also matches with God's nature, which is infinite love, mercy, and compassion, even to those who don't love Him. He is an awesome God!

God Bless

i love my Saviour so much when i look back on the life He has enabled me to survive and think how recently He brought me up from the miry clay i am very impatient to learn more about Him by reading his word and letting Him live in me by His Spirit which lives and remains in me, recently i was lost in a sinful lifestyle that was causing me great grief but He touched me in a sovereign act of kindness and now i am walking in Him and He is walking in me.

Psa 40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

tonight i spent 5 hours or so working hard with some non-christian freinds of mine and they were in many ways more Christ like than me, what i mean is when i got a little impatient at one stage one of them was forgiving and understanding and patient with me (i could have hugged him) and another i remember when i was in a very fleshy carnal mood some months ago looked at me in disbelief and said "stop it" as if to say "i expect better of you mate, more love less condemnation" now these guys aren't perfect far from it but i could tell you tales of how one of them gives until it hurts and though he does not know Jesus by the indwelling of His spirit yet i am EXTREMELY humbled by my unbelieving freinds character which obviously God gave him.

to suggest that God would do anything to bring about his eternal suffering is unthinkable for i feel Christs great fondness for him. He is known by my maker and his and i long to see Him in the light. as does God. and praise his name we WILL see him in the light one day when

Eph 1:9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
Eph 1:10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

there you have it i know it is His will for my freinds to know Him and i know He works all things after the counsel of HIS WILL (and noone elses)

anyway sorry to go on but am persuaded that God will have His way

AMEN?

"I'm fairly new to all this, so I've probably still got a lot to learn but for now I think I'll stick to what I believe to be right, and that is I don't know where we go when we die, but where ever it is I'm sure my husband, family and friends will be with me. I'm no better than them because I've decided to believe in God."

Read the Bible. The answer is there.
We all sin but there is forgiveness in Christ. Those who reject this great salvation are separated from Christ. God cannot look upon sin. When God looks upon believers He sees Christ instead of us. No matter how good a person may be, he is born a sinner and is in need of Savior. Dying without Christ will result in eternal separation from Christ and from those who are His. If you don't believe in a place of heaven or hell, then separation from Christ is a condition that is enough of a hell itself.
Christ mentions hell, heaven and Satan. I believe these are real.
If everyone goes to heaven, why did Jesus suffer and die?
If everyone goes to heaven, then why do we need the Bible?
Satan blinds us to the Truth. (We do a pretty good job of deceiving ourselves)
The difference is life and death.
Think about it.

I feel that what has been meant (in the O.P. etc )

is that certain people believe that

hell is something where it's -over- (for them)

(similar to Jehovah Witness' beliefs )

I feel that there -COULD-

be a place of torment ,

and that -GOD-

-WOULDN'T-

want people to go there.

(Have you ever considered that torment could exist on -THIS- earth?

It does.

Does God really want us, -or Job- to suffer? Is that what He -WANTS- ? NO!

The Antichrist will arise. Why? DOES GOD WANT THAT? no! There are 'laws'

that God -MUST- abide by, IMO. Hell (with torment) is 'LOGICAL', if it's a place of -EXACT- punishment. However... -GOD- doesn't 'want -anyone- to go there', although -THEY WILL-. )

what does the word "hell" mean ?

a place of eternal torment isn't it ?

well the words translated hell sheol and hades mean vanishing point grave unseen imperceptible it is very bad to translate hades as hell, as bad as to translate sleep as choreographer (but worse because of the consequences)

ie this business of translating various words in the original texts to the english "hell" has really caused trouble to a lot of people

you can get an electronic bible called e-sword and check the original words by clicking on the strongs numbers, it really is amazing to see how "hell" disappears once you look at the original text in it's inspired form.

even people who believe the hell thing are agreeing and translators are starting to remove the hell thing as the poor scholarship that it is.

don't take my word for it and don't be lazy check it for yourself.

people say oh but that's to wild brother whats the point in "getting saved" at all if everyone goes to heaven

do they ?? ..what is the gospel of the kingdom of heaven

Mat 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

i believe God is doing a work whereby those who recieve Him get to be part of the body of Christ that is orthodox is it not?

well i for one love Him so i follow Him who else has the words of life both now and in the ages to come and after that ..there is always an afterwards with God.

i would weep and gnash my teeth if i missed out on His best for me the kingdom of heaven to be His body His bride His son !!

1Jo 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

i humbly submit to you that the gospel of the kingdom has in times past been perverted into the turn or torture type of thing ..it is bad!!

but i hear another voice, a still small voice saying

fear not, the kingdom heaven is within you

and i rejoice

and follow Him out of love not fear

and He leads me in the everlasting way as He does all His children

anyway

much love to all

We are told very little about the nature of the lake of fire, to assume that a persons "term" to endure it is temporal is not based upon Scriptural evidence. There is one passage regarding the duration of some of the futrue residents of the lake of fire;

Rev 20:10The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where[a] the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Sadly you are incorrect if you consider these ones to "cease to exist" in that the text clearly indicates "forever and ever".

OOPS. I lost my words.

this site is 'set up' to -easily- let you -dump- by 'accident' -EVERYTHING- you just wrote. Like I say, it's 'set up' , to do that.

Other websites -AREN'T- this way (you can see that, can't you?)

I am working on starting a -NEW- Forum, with bravenet.com

(=No Thread Deletes, no 'ACCIDENTAL' loss of -WRITINGS- )

(I'll keep you posted)

In the meantime:
----------------

If you write -offline- , in notepad,

and copy it,

then -paste- the answer (when you are here),

you won't -LOSE- any writings (they'll -still- be in notepad, no matter what)

So...

Hello, brother.

I enjoy our conversations.

(My short answer)

Sheol (=Hebrew)

Hades (=Greek)

Both mean the grave...

-BUT-, if you use The King James,

you'll get -hell- when other versions

(like the N.A.S.B)

says (correctly):

-HADES-

--------------------------

Gehenna, on the other hand seems (to me) to be the -SPECIFIC- place of torment.

-----------------------------

However:
---------

The way certain 'Bible Thumpers'

(who -REALLY- -DO- 'thump' people)

talk about hell,

They -DO- imply

(falsely)

that God would want

people to go there.

No -WONDER- so many people will reject God.

-GREEDY PROUD HYPOCRATES WITH FALSE MESSAGES ALL OVER, WHO WOULD DO GOD A FAVOUR, BY DROPPING DEAD- ,

are to blame.

(Come out of her my people)

-------------------------------

Question to all:
--------------

Have you -EVER- led -anyone- to Christ?

If the answer is -NO- , why not?

Perhaps -MANY PEOPLE- have

-SO MANY FALSE MESSAGES- ,

that no one would be -STUPID- enough

to 'believe all that garbage'.

(Congratulations to them, -NOT-. I'm sure the enemy is well pleased with the service they've given him.)

How can one expect to lead others to Jesus, if 90+% of what they say is -LIES- ?

Have you (anyone?) -EVER- led -SOMEONE- , to Jesus?

(I've done so.)

If you haven't, might I suggest that you try something -DIFFERENT-?

Why not learn from people who -DO- -lead others to Jesus-,

and -NOT-

from those who are 'filled with -nothing-

but 'hot air', as it were.

(I don't play 'proud, holier than thou', or seek to please -MEN- , rather than God )

(They do)

(They know who they are, and God -IS- watching. )

If it took 'heart attacks',

to -STOP-

False Teachers from

'shutting' -MANY- people out of Christ's kingdom,

let them happen,

in Jesus' Name.

(What matters, is saving souls, -NOT- people's stupid 'reputations', of which I'm disgusted at even being around. )

If people continue with their -HYPOCRISY- ,

after having -CLEARLY- been warned...

it's like they're -WILLFULLY- doing -EVIL-

(Oh, wait a minute, yeah. The Pharisees -TOLD- everyone that they had the right -MESSAGE-,

-AND- they -ALSO- crucified Christ.

Many people believed them though, didn't they?

Just like they still do.

"Beware the leaven of the pharisees".

Why does no one hear this?

Because they "SEEK THE APROVAL OF MEN, RATHER THAN GOD.")

I'm reminded of what -PAUL- said:

"-CURSED- be anyone who presents -ANOTHER- gospel."

Yeah.

Curse those evil people

(they're the ones who -PRETEND- that they're Christian, but they like to be

-PROUD- ,

and to have money,

but they'll -NEVER- have God

(the choice to 'shut people out' is -SO- evil, that they -WILLFULLY- serve the enemy for MONEY and POWER, and have made their -FINAL- decision, as it were. )

and scripture implys that -MOST- Christians are -gullible-, and they'll believe these Non Christians who are merely -pretending-. (be ye wise....Pray for wisdom...etc).

They stop people from being saved.

Let he who has ears, -LISTEN-

Peace in Christ.

This judgement really isn't fair, no one here has advocated that God wants a person to go to hell (and yet I have not been talking about hell)

People -ARE- doing this though.

Example:
--------
Have you ever heard this one, that people say? :

Um, no. That's garbage. That says a LIE (could the motive be -GREED-? )

Who are these idiots that just repeat everything without seeing if it's true or not?

The following, is something I found that -trys to- show -HOW- the word -HADES- , is translated, in the different bibles.

Example:

In many cases,

HADES is -RENDERED- into

-HELL- in the King James

(according to -where- the translators 'thought' they should 'STICK IT IN' )

-BUT- , in the N.A.S.B. (for example) , it is -ALWAYS- rendered -HADES- (like it should be)

prop. unseen {Strong's #86}

*2 depending on the Greek text, the word here may be hades {unseen} or thanatos {death}.
*3 margin "Or,hell"
*4 margin "Or,hell" in some 1611 printings. Some printings had "grave" in the text and "Or, hell" in the margin.

Clearly some peculiar intentional hanky panky going on.

*5 Spelling as in the original
*6 Capitalized in the original
*7 note says Greek Hades
*8 Hades] The unseen World, the adobe of departed spirits, In the A.V. both this word and 'Gehenna' are rendered 'Hell.' Each occurs twelve times. In this translation the two words are everywhere kept distinct.
*9 The Unseen World] Greek, 'Hades,' the adobe of departed spirits; Hebrew, 'Sheol.' "Hades is, as it were, the sepulche of souls" (Bengel).
