Apparently, Steve Johnson of the Buffalo Bills is or was a very religious man. On Sunday, the Bills were playing the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game was in overtime. The Bills quarterback threw the ball to wide receiver Steve Johnson. It was the game-winning score.
He dropped the ball.
Afterwards, Mr. Johnson wrote an angry twit to God, blaming Him for the fact that he dropped the ball. Something to the effect - "So this is how it is going to be" - and stuff like that. Apparently, he expected more for his prayers.
I can understand being angry but this - or maybe I'm too old to understand this "modern" technology.

If you would like to comment on this, please do.

Yea I think that's ridiculous. I saw it on TV and couldn't believe he missed the catch but things happen. There is a lot of stress on players to perform in overtime. Humans aren't perfect. I don't think he can say that this is the ONLY time he's ever missed a catch or dropped a ball.

Wide receivers aren't always the most stable of people.
He appeared to be of the belief that God caused him to drop the ball or, at the least, God should have done a better job of helping him catch it.
Hopefully, he has cooled off since then.

I can't say I'm any better. I blame God when things go wrong, and it's just as silly of me to do that as it is for Steve Johnson of the Buffalo Bills.

I'm going to guess that you have NEVER done that on this site or on any other site like this - Have you?

Oh, probably. I can be pretty unstable myself sometimes. And when my emotions are out of control, there is no telling what I'll say.

Now, is it right? Rational? True? Correct? Nope. Just emotional.

O.K. Thank You for admitting that. I donn't believe that many people would.

Sounds like a vending machine model of God. He put in his dollar bill (aka prayer) and got ticked off when the vending machine didn't dole out his request.

Why is there a big stink about a sports guy lambasting God when things go wrong, but the converse never happens? At every game-winning interview there's plenty of thanks to God to go around, but never when the proverbial crap hits the fan. I give a bravo to this man, for consistency if nothing else.

As his coach said there are two kind of people the humble and the humbled. Maybe God thought that Stevie (who lately had been getting a lot of ego stroking publicity) needed to be in that second group for a while. I'm sure after he calms down he'll come to the conclusion that God put him in position to be a hero and it was his own fault he ended up being the goat.

It wasn't God's fault that he failed to catch the ball nor did God help another guy catch the ball. I actually agree with you on that.
I can see thanking him because you praise Him but not for winning, catching a pass, or anything to do with the game itself.

On a similar note, I remember watching Valerie Brisco-Hooks, in the 1984 Summer Olympics, when she knelt in prayer on the track after winning one of her three gold medals. My then-father-in-law scoffed, "What's she thanking Him for? He didn't have anything to do with her winning." I disagreed. He gave her the talent.

But does God intervene directly in sports events, determining which team is going to win, or which person will run faster, or whether someone will catch or drop the ball? I don't think so.

Thank you! This so right its unreal. This is the most correct statement made in this thread. I saw on another board people lambasting this guy for his statement and telling him not to blame God it was ALL his fault, he needed to practice harder, he needed to do this and that. However if the roles were reversed and he made this catch and thanked God, people wouldnt have said "This is all you, you made this happen, you practiced so hard and made this possible." Now would have they?

I seriously doubt the Creator cares about a sporting event, you know with war, famine and natural disasters plaguing the Earth, I seriously doubt much consideration is given to the Yankees winning the World Series or a Wide Receiver making a touchdown catch in a meaningless game (seeing how the Bills are not going to make the playoffs). This is why I laugh everytime I watch a big game (be it the Super Bowl, College Bowl, or World Series) and I see fans praying for their team to win particularly close games. I mean seriously how egotistical can one get? I wonder what is involved with those prayers, do they promise God if he allows their team to win then they will attend church every sunday? Heal the sick? Raise the Dead? Put an end to starvation? Make George Lucas rewrite the prequels to be more fitting with the Original Trilogy? What promises that will benefit all mankind do they make to God if he will only deliver a victory to their team? You see where I find the humor in it?

I had probably heard complaints along these lines about 500 times. For the first 499 times I agreed with them. Then it dawned on me that it is an extremely logical and consistent thing to praise God when you win a football game but not pin the blame for a loss on Him. First of all, a player is at much higher risk of the sin of pride after a win than after a loss. Hence, there's a good practical reason for the player to remind himself of his dependence on God after a win. Second, as John and Evenstar mentioned, God is not a vending machine. God is a gift-giver. The wise give thanks to gift-givers after recieving gifts but don't get mad when they don't recieve a gift. I send a thank you card to my mother after she gives me a cake on my birthday, but I don't send her a ****-you card on the 364 days when she doesn't give me a cake. Third, if the player believes that God created him and the entire cosmos, then it'd follow logically that the very existence of the player, the game, and everything else are owed to God, so therefore God does deserve credit for the win.

I must disagree with Word in that God never "needs" me to pray and so He gives the desire. He doesn't "need" anything. He is Almighty God. I am the one who "needs" to pray.

But it also seems to me that the Holy Spirit draws us to the Father, and therefore the interest in prayer and the desire to do so comes from Him. We have the free will to answer His call or not, but He is the one who does the calling.

Wow. "If you disagree with me, you are disagreeing with God." Sheesh.
Don't worry - You're not the only one who wasn't chosen like a few other people were (I'm being sarcastic).

Word - Maybe you should just go to Heaven now. (It's called sarcasm).
Some advice - Christians don't brag and God DIDN'T talk to you.
