  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has this gone too far?

Yes, and we forgive those who blaspheme our religion and try to love them while the Muslims and others issue fatwas, terrorize, or make life a living Hades for anyone who disagrees with them!

yep, because a faith that forgives, blesses, and prays for the very people that are persecuting it would not have survived 2000 years unless it truly was revealed by God.

Well, I usually don't look at longetivity because Hinduism is an ANCIENT religion and still going strong, and Judaism and Islam are still alive and kickin' strongly as well.

It's not a question of which one is the oldest or that oldest makes right. It's that millennia are real evidence that the religion has a great deal of truth, that deliberate inventions of men as such on their own don't last that long - no lie can possibly survive that long without being heavily buttressed by truth. Hinduism and Buddhism are ancient pagan, reflections of truth that are not THE Truth but which have some truth that we acknowledge. Judaism is the historical thing that prepared the world and brought Christ into it and went wrong by not accepting Him, and what they have maintained from antiquity remainsctrue, with the caveat that Christ has fulfilled their prophecies. Islam is a Christian heresy that has kept some Christian truth while radically denying other parts of it. But all contain truth that young modern religions have so much less of.

it's not just the longevity, it's that with what the Church has had to go through and how the Church has responded. if God were not guiding it, the Church would have been gone long ago.

Hi Rus,
You're stating the obvious to me and I know all this. My point is that age means nothing, just as you said. I said that we don't go by age, but by Truth and the deposit of faith, theology, Truth with a capital T is everything, not age. Not sure why you even posted this.....

You show foolishness, not wisdom with your words. No one here wishes ill of them. Many here have called for compassion when dealing with them, including the Russian Orthodox Church. which you slander with the words and attitude of antiChrist. If you bothered to read the thread instead of just being a troll, you would have known that.

[bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] Riot holds a public orgy, publicly stuffs frozen chickens into their orifices, paint penises on bridges, and you pretend they are being persecuted. Every country has laws against the self-serving exploits they perform, as well they should. [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] Riot are the hypocrites, and you are foolish enough to believe their empty lies. What a shame.
Yes. In this country, that's now considered "FREE SPEECH," instead of what it really is: Vulgarity and Obscenity. It's common sense to believe a society does not need to promote or "Ok" such actions. In doing so, we see where it is leading our own country.

If they are truly mentally ill, isn't sentencing them to hard labor instead of treatment unethical and a human rights violation?

And really, both sides of you are getting way too worked up.
IMO, they belong in a mental health facility doing community service (monitored).

That's exactly what I think. Obviously what they did was wrong, but I think Russia was about as bad or worse in how they handled it.
It was a bit harsh, but for Russia, their laws and how they go about dealing with whatever actions is their country's right. Of course, we will see it differently and maybe see the sentences a bit harsh, but for Russia, I don't think it's really harsh. From what I read, the regular punishment for such crimes that these women did was I believe up to 5 years in prison. The court lessened the time.

Yeah, I know it's different in Russia, but I still think it wasn't handled well, even taking that into consideration.

The good 'ol USA is #1 in both the raw number of prisoners, and the number pf prisoners per capita. We lead Russia by a long shot. Also, FYI, Russia has not executed anyone since 1996, while we have over 3,000 people waiting on Death Row.

Yes, Russia can clean up their system. But America needs to look to the log in her own eye before trying to reform other countries.

And really, both sides of you are getting way too worked up.

Does forced treatment work for anything, Adaephon? Look at how well forcing drug and alcohol addicts into rehab work (think of Lindsay Lohan as an example)? You can't force people into treatment for it and expect it to work, and that includes the mentally ill, when they don't want to change. Unfortunately, people choose to do evil things, and repentance is needed. In the Church from the beginning, there has been discipline (read St. Paul's epistles to find proof of that). If I commit certain sins, the priest may very well not allow me to receive the Eucharist until I repent for the sin that I am committing. He would be doing that out of love for me. Unfortunately, people who are protesting something have learned that committing outrageous acts gets attention for the issue they are protesting and there is no mental illness involved.

Also, these types of actions are not necessarily mental illness either. We need to be careful that we are not just assuming that a person must be mentally ill to be doing such acts. There are many, many people in the world are truly mentally ill who do not commit any of these types of actions like [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] Riot does. Unfortunately, sometimes people just choose to commit evil acts that they fully know are evil. With all due respect, maybe we should just assume that every murderer and rapist is mentally ill and just let them be running loose in society.

By the way, there is hypocrisy in every person and every church. Maybe we should each be looking at ourselves and our own churches before slinging mud at others.

Someone acting trollish has resurrected an old, controversial thread, and a few of my Orthodox brethren have really seriously taken the bait. Come on, guys...it's Great Lent for goodness sakes...don't take the dang bait
