• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hello...

I'm just wondering: has anyone every actually changed from being gay to straight? I've heard lots of Christians say that they've managed to control their homosexual struggles, that they've managed to find contentedness and peace, but I've never heard of anyone who was sexually attracted to men at one point, and then sexually attracted to women. Is it possible?

Members are reminded that the Recovery section has specific guidelines concerning acceptable replies.

Specifically, endorsement of homosexuality is not permitted. Endorsement means you cannot encourage someone to engage in these behaviors or indicate that they are acceptable choices

Recovery is an area where we encourage members in their struggles, without debate or judgment.

I heard about a Jewish psychiatrist with no preconceptions or preferences who was interested in that question. He took about a dozen homosexual people into therapy and all but two were changed. Sorry, I can't quote the source, but that would be an example outside a Christian context of people changing.

I have to say that I never met 1 that actually can say they are free from the temptation.
I believe we will have to struggle with it for the rest of our lives, until Christ change us completely in the end.

(after all, aren't all of us struggling with sin for the rest of our lives? Just because we might not be completely free, it doesn't mean that we should give up trying.. Just like, we should not give up trying not to sin).

I have met one Christian Lady who was a lesbian and decided that her relationship with God and pleasing Him was more important than living such a life [her words, NOT mine]. She's now swears that she is neither attracted to women or men [she has no sexual urges] --- and continues to live as a celibate for a number of years now.

As someone that has struggled with SSA my whole life, I think I have gained some insight into this matter. What I am posting below ONLY applies if you have placed your faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross for your salvation. You must be a Christian for this to be pertinent to you and your situation.

This is a quote I found on a Website:
"My old nature is gay and always will be - BUT my old nature has to be reckoned dead, for my new nature is alive to Christ and cannot be that way. The trick is in living in the new. I had always thought the old man needed to be cured. But there is no cure. The old man has to die, not be fixed."

For many, many years I have wanted God to take away the SSA from my old nature! The old man can never, ever improve, it can only be reckoned dead (Greek: katargeo = powerless) as we see in Romans 6:6-11. I have known the truth about this for many years. How could I still have been deceived into thinking self could/would be improved? This was amazing to me when I read this. I do wish the old nature could be improved, but I know and understand it can never change. Self only begets more self. Never anything better.

Romans 6:11 has two parts:
1. Consider (reckon) yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin... (OLD sinful/SSA Man)
2. but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NEW sinless Man!)

The New Creation life of Christ within (through the indwelling Holy Spirit) cannot sin, never! If I walk in the Spirit, I will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
(Galatians 5:16 NKJV)

If I am not abiding in Christ via the "reckoning" (consider myself dead to the old sin nature Romans 6:11) then the sinful passions of SSA will become evident in my life again.

I think it's possible for someone with SSA to gain an attraction to a woman, but I hear it's more touch oriented than visual. In my case, God is giving me the ability to be pure and celibate for the time being, but I am getting more interested in having a relationship with woman.

I hope this helps by giving some "been there, done that" insight.

Yes it can happen. This is a personal testimony, and I am a witness to it.
