Hmmm...

"He fittingly admonishes Victor that he should not cut off whole churches of God which observed the tradition of an ancient custom"

I think this is very true in regard to a) a whole church that b) has been continuously in communion and c) has observed a continuously held tradition in so being.
But it is not at all true for an individual who is not a church and has only been in communion for 5 or 25 (if that), rather than a thousand years or more.

That's the whole point. An individual can make up anything on his own, and/or go off in any direction. It is the affirmation over time, accepted by all over time that validates Orthodox practice as worthy of paradosis, being passed down.

Good point. When it comes to addressing the entire church and held consistent to certain traditions, it is erroneous whenever others (in the name of speaking for the Church) go counter to that because it disagrees with their ideas on what the Church should be like. There are many individuals (when it comes to customs held by the Apostles or Christ) claiming to be against individuals seen as the Church even when they may hold individual stances counter to the actual practice done by the founders of the Church and others consistent with it to this day - and after having centuries of time to see the way traditions carried on, it really lacks a lot in sensibility to try to selectively be against certain traditions that were a part of the Church's history.

It's not difficult for individuals or groups of individuals (when not aware of the history of the Church) to create as they go along - or against the choices of others in where they are at - and it can be backwards assuming that all things affirmed over time by certain parts of the Church are valid when the reality is that any practice (should it go counter to Christ) does not hold validity no matter how long it's practiced or how much affirmation over time and acceptance it receives by other Orthodox.

For the Orthodox Church sees the Bible as inspired by God and authoritative...even though Saint Paul in 2 Thessalonians 2:15wrote, “Therefore brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle" - something he repeated in 1 Corinthians 11:1-3 consistent with what Christ noted when it came to his comments on examples( John 13:15 ) when it came to being cautious of any tradition that goes against things the Lord desired/noted in the name of honoring God (Matthew 15:5-7 ).

  • I Corinthians 4:15-16
[*] 15 Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.

  • [*]
    1 Corinthians 11:1
[*]Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

  • Philippians 3:17
[*]Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.

That's one of the basics when it comes to Orthodox practice - it must be in line with the heart/sentiments and actions of the Founders of what it means to be Orthodox...and one doesn't get more Orthodox than the Savior, Christ Jesus.
