  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No matter what I or other people say about the Halobox, I mean Xbox, Bungie did a really good job making Halo 2 a great multiplayer game.

Pros:
User-friendly logon systems
Clans (good for making friends)
Little (if any) lag
Wide variety of maps
Fairly fun weapons
Fast paced, easy-to-pick-up action

Cons:
One word...Needler.
Whiny little 10-year olds who shouldn't even be playing an M-rated game
Unrealistic as heck (see subpoints)
  • Jumping 10 feet into the air
  • Infinite and pretty quick shield regen
  • No health
  • Really fast reloading times
Overhyped in general
Fanboy central

I'd like Halo a lot better if you couldn't reload as fast and can only jump a couple feet. Take Perfect Dark Zero as an example (except for the jumping bit).

I always find it amusing that people criticize futuristic games for being unrealistic. The rest of your points are good, but I have to point out that the above are pretty poor cons.

Jumping high into the air is explained by a couple of things. First, the halos are obviously possessed of a weaker gravitational pull than we are used to. In addition, you play a cybernetically-enhanced soldier. I'm sure your Mjolnir armor helps with the jumping. Alternatively, you are a Covenant soldier, an alien with arguably stonger leg muscles or somesuch.

Shielding is a fantastical technology anyway. It's the purview of the designers how fast they want it to recharge. It's not like we have some sort of realistic counterpart to compare the shield regen system to for determining the level of realism they used.

Health, again, can simply be explained away by your Mjolnir armor quickly repairing your wounds.

The reloading times I'll let you have, only because we know how long cartridge-loading guns take to reload and the guns in Halo obviously reload a little quickly.

i didn't like it much. Compared to other FPS games, it failed in several categories.

Very few weapons, especially for a sci-fi game
^and only a couple are used or allowed in multiplayer
very few maps. If you don't believe me, look how many default maps there are in UT2004.
No difference in the map during different gametypes: the maps looked the same, be it deathmatch, or capture the flag
Worst jumping ever: the low gravity idea doesn't work as some maps are on earth, while others on a ringworld.
Very few character meshes, only two models: and 99% of the time, only one is used. It gets boing shooting at colorful master cheifs all day...

It reminds me of Tournament MTG, when a player is restricted to only a few options, everyone must adhere and adopt the most popular strategies to 'compete'. In halo, the most popular maps, gametypes, and weapons being constantly used, really deprives the enjoyment. Similar to how most servers on UT2004 have nothing but only a select few maps, and when theres a server with different maps, no one is on.

What i do like, however, is how easy the options are to change on the fly, harkening back to the goldeneye days, i love having pistols only, or snipers only, or anything else interesting.

Let me just say this before I start ranting. The main focus of the Halo series is the single player game. We'll start with the weapons, there are 19 weapons total (6 human, 8 Covanent, 2 grenades,2 turrets, and 1 forerunner). Only one of these weapons, the Covenant fuelrod cannon, is excluded from multiplayer. You can find almost every one of them on all the maps.

There are 11 maps in the game, and 9 more can be added by using the Halo2 multiplayer pak. With difference in maps between slayer, CTF, etc. I don't see why there needs to be a difference. Since they are the same, it makes it easier to memorize the maps and the locations of weapons, overshields, and invisibility.

Next is the jumping, I think that someone else already mentioned this, but you are a Spartan-II class cyborg. You are physically enhanced to be much more than the average human, thus the ability to jump at an outragious height.

The lack of character models is easily explained by the story. Spartan-IIs, and Elites are the only characters in the entire game with shields, thus they are the only ones that are able to be put into multiplayer games.

This is probably not your reason, and as far as I know it is not, but I just want say this. The main reason that most people put down this game is because it is good, but they aren't good at it. I've seen people say stuff about this game that is pure rubish, and all because they aren't good at the game. Once again, I will say that I don't feel that this is the reason that you said what you said. I just needed to say that.

If anybody here is a real big Halo/Halo2 fan, you need to check out some of the fanfiction at hboff.bungie.org, there is some really good stories there.

I think they should have put it on PC. I could only see them making money from that anyway. I love it on the x-box, but I love aiming with the mouse even more. They kind of missed the boat with call of duty and battlefield 2 though...

Bungee announced that Halo 2's coming out for PC presumably sometime next year. It depends on how soon Vista launches, since you'll need Direct x10 to run it.

I'll agree on all notes. With one exception. I love the needler! I was murderous with it even in the original (when it sucked, but I still racked up quite a few kills).

@Spartan006, if the main focus of halo is the single player game, that's pretty sad. I've seen better and more exciting storylines in children's books (at least for halo 1, I haven't played halo 2, though I've heard its story is even worse). A week after I beat the game I couldn't have explained the story line because I had already forgotten it. I've tried playing it through again and I have no idea how I got myself to play through it the first time.

I will say, I know what your talking about with people who don't like the game just because they aren't good at it. I've seen that with all games. One of my friends hated morrowind because it took him 5 minutes to get lost and have no idea what to do. Personally, I was good for someone who didn't actively play. If we had 4 or 8 people and only one or two actively played, I would routinely be 2nd or 3rd on the kills list, even with the fact that I used the needler a lot. And I enjoy the muliplayer. But I really do think given everything, the game isn't that good. Multiplayer is good, single player sucks, and everything else is decent. (I don't find graphics that important in a game, and Halo 2's are good, but considering how few different things there actually are, compared to say, Oblivion, or even Morrowind, I'm not impressed).
