Iron swam because it was demonstrating a miracle? Because iron, of all things, NEVER ever "swims", and this was an extraordinary and memorable event for all time.
It swam because it was not lying at the man's feet, but 10 or 20 feet away in "who knows what?" direction. Scary enough to feel around in a swamp floor, etc., but to feel for a SHARP object, and not know "WHERE to feel around for it," or "had it buried itself under something, behind something?"... i still don't get why it swam instead of floated?
