I agree, certainly American Idiot isn't the best album released this year. Green Day isn't completely intolerable, but they aren't anything different, and haven't really brought anything new to bat since Dookie.

You know what? 99% of those artists dont deserve a Grammy.
I tried to compile my list but I just scrapped it, when I was picking songs just because I had to, not because any of them deserved to win.

Come talk to me when there is something a little better.

At the risk of ticking off U2 fans, Vertigo is a great album. I really like it... is it Grammy material when compared to Joshua Tree? ATYCLB? Not a chance.
I'm not too impressed with the general load of selections either - but I think I migt have to agree to disagree with you on U2, sis. I think the song is strong enough to win in its categories and should have definitely got a look in for Song of the Year. But we'll have to wait to see if teh whole album's strong enough for a truckload of nominations next year. My picks in the categories I know enough about:

-Record Of The Year:
Heaven-Los Lonely Boys

-Song Of The Year
The Reason-Daniel Estrin & Douglas Robb, songwriters (Hoobastank)

-Best New Artist
Joss Stone (or Maroon 5)

-Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal
Vertigo-U2

-Best Hard Rock Performance
Slither-Velvet Revolver

-Best Rock Song
Vertigo-Bono, Adam Clayton, The Edge & Larry Mullen, songwriters (U2)

-Best Rock Album
Contraband-Velvet Revolver

-Best Alternative Music Album
Franz Ferdinand-Franz Ferdinand

-Best Rock Gospel Album
Wire-Third Day

-Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
Sunrise-Norah Jones (not really pop, but it's a great song)

-Best Male Pop Vocal Performance
You Raise Me Up-Josh Groban

-Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal
She Will Be Loved-Maroon5

-Best Song Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media
Accidentally In Love (From Shrek 2)-Counting Crows

-Best Short Form Music Video
Walkie Talkie Man-Steriogram

In the end I nominate Cincy's opening line for "Best summation of the Grammys"

BTW, you should all check out Brian Wilson's CD. It should be considered for record of the year in my opinion. I've gotten the chance to listen to it from my radio show. Check out his site for info about him: http://www.brianwilson.com/brian/index.html

Album of the Year - American Idiot

I'm a huge U2 fan and their new one is very good, as is the Franz Ferdinand record. I really was not a big fan of Green Day. Sure, I have "Dookie" like everyone else, but that's it. So, I was totally unprepared for American Idiot. Hands down, by far, the best rock album I have heard this year, or for many years. No kidding. I don't get excited by too much music anymore, and good new rock music is hard to come by. But this album is great, a word I have used very few times over the (34!) years I have been buying records.
