So what exactly is the point of these 'Battle of the Bands'? Purely to see who is the most popular and not neccesarily the most talented? A don't think a lot of people realise this hence the recent agro.

I said what the point is:
We are doing this for fun, to talk about music, for people to listen to bands they might not have listened to otherwise. If you have a problem dont participate.

All for FUN.
To find out about bands you dont know well
To find out interesting things about bands
To find out their influences, albums, history etc.
All for fun.

There is no way that we can have some sort of screening process that says "Vote for who is the best/most talented/most this/most that and do not vote for just whoever you like the best." I think that people have been voting really honestly lately as seen in the Floyd v. DMB battle. There isnt a way we can restrict this to "qualified" voters, however that would be defined. And there is no reason to, it is all for fun.

Perception and reality are often different. In this case, the subject is musical quality. People have different perceptions, but these perceptions have no weight on whether the music is actually good or not.

Honestly I had no idea who Van Morrison was and I thought "it"" was a group, thats the only reason he was in there.
My problem is: how do we define a solo artist?
They all have bands, well most of them do. Like Jimi. He had Noel Redding, one of the best bassists ever. And his band in the beginning was the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Did he ever go totally solo? Not that I know of.... Billy Joel always had a band, so did Zappa, so does Trey Anastasio (Band), Van Halen, etc etc. And what makes the Dave Matthews Band different than Frank Zappa? The absence of the word "band" at the end of the artist name??? So my problem is where do we draw the line? I have not been able to figure this out yet. Please let me know if you've got some solid criteria.

I guess just having released material as a solo artist, with no kinda official affiliations with a backing group but just session musicians as it were. Give me some omre time to think about that.

My dream final would be Bob Dylan v David Bowie. Now both of these guys were assiciated with bands (Dylan with 'The Band' and Bowie with Tin Machine) but both are undoubtedly regarded as solo artists.
