  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Smartphones may very well be the wave of the future for general computing. More than a few of the next wave of smartphones can be docked into a laptop and be used as a full-fledged OS.

Next step will be a monitor/keyboard/mouse/dock setup that completely does away with any extra hardware. Plop phone into dock and you'll be able to start browsing the web, word process, etc.

I don't see that happening. I think that they will be much more fluid in working with your OS, but I can't see them being the whole computer. Plus, consider the personal security risk that would come with it. People lose phones a lot more than they lose laptops, whether from destruction or stolen.

I do like my smartphone, but I wouldn't put my taxes on it. :p

The trend of everything in computing electronics has been miniaturization. I mean, we already trust finances to credit cards. If that number gets into the wrong hands, people can buy stuff using your bank account. A phone-sized computer wouldn't really be any different.

Iphones are going to be on the Verizon network next month. I love my blackberry, but my Ipod touch is so cool. I might have to switch over to the Iphone.

iPhone on Verizon came too late (for me). Android is already the smartphone king on the Verizon network. I like better anyway. Android is much more open, and it's not intentionally crippled anywhere near as much as iOS is.

Congrats on the iPhone. I got mine last summer and have loved it since. I'm also jailbroken but to be honest its not all its cracked up to be. I love being able to always carry around a Bible with me in my pocket along with any notes, music, videos or games that I like.

As for Android being more open....its a blessing and a curse. Yes its great that its an open market but from people I've talked to that have them there is a large percentage of it thats smut. I really don't want my children being opened to that garbage. Also being open makes them susceptible to viruses and whatnot at some point.

Now I can't wait for iPhone to go 4G.

Congrats on the new device! :)

And yes, I think smartphones will be the "next" wave. I already do so much on my Android device. Taxes, sermon notes, networking... quite a lot.

And, believe it or not, despite Stevie's claims to the contrary, your kids may be more exposed to smut on an iPhone. They may not get it from the App Store, but there is quite a lot of rough content optimized for iOS.

Congrats on your new iPhone! I love mine, and there are some really good apps out there.

My favorite is the Bible Shaker. It lets you choose a topic and then "shake" a scripture out based on the topic you choose! Pretty handy...

Hey, I have the Bible Shaker app too, and I love it! I highly recommend it

What are the costs involved in using a phone as a computer?

You will more than likely pay for data... some companies charge specialized data fees for newer, faster phones.

There maybe costs associated with purchasing apps to increase functionality. Depending on platform, prices vary. Generally, iOS and Android have the cheapest apps I believe. The password manager I use costs $9.99. Most cost less than that.

While I think smartphones bridge the gap somewhat, they are not ready to replace computers completely yet.

Indeed. Smartphones are not powerful enough to replace desktops. There is no real good way for them to translate to a desktop environment. The closest would be the Atrix with its built-in Firefox.

Actually, that would be a pretty good idea... Get a bit beefier hardware, and then have ChromeOS fire up when an Android device is plugged into a dock. Run Android apps in browser tabs alongside regular web browsing.

If we want to get really funky, keep a super-compact version of Linux on the device that then boots up to a full desktop environment.

Yes to ALL of this!
