As far as I know, we are ONE group.
That was my understanding too.

If you want to see how they do it in the old country, pay one of our parishes a visit. No pews though...we STAND, and STAND :)
My OCA parish has no pews.

It is important to know when one among us enters or has entered the diaconate or the priesthood, etc., so that we can use the appropriate respectful terms.

Although I will say I don't care if you're the Ecumenical Patriarch--if you insult my patriarch, my metropolitan, or my archdiocese without due cause, I will most certainly not be afraid to call you on it. :p ;)

Thanks, but I just want to be Tikon on this forum. (Kind of my place away from it all.)

PLEASE let the Patriarch stuff go, Matrona. I have apologized. No need to beat a dead horse. :)

I will respect that. Now if you become priest (a sacrament administering priest that is), I'm going to be asking for blessings everytime I log on :D

Is that so?

Then what's with all the cannibalism?

The Antiochian Patriarchate is not ordaining lesbians and declaring that the Resurrection never happened. There's no epidemic of abusive priests here.

Did you miss church a few Sundays ago? Specifically, Meatfare Sunday?

Neat.

On the other end of the spectrum, I am probably the only person in my family in the past thousand years--on either side--to be an Orthodox Christian.

Our Lord does not command you to imply that we Antiochians are heterodox. ("I am not 100% sure that Antioch is in "communion" per say [sic]... I know that MY patriarchate is not in communion with them, which suits me.")

We have not been threatened with anathemas from CANONICAL Orthodox churches, so I take it the CANONICAL churches aren't fussed with what my patriarchate does. Unless Antioch is declared anathema by an ecumenical council, I don't see any reason for you to be fussed about it, either.

Common things happen commonly; uncommon things do not. Therefore, when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.
[*]

St. Athanasius is a zebra.

When you criticize them, you are criticizing your brothers who have given their whole lives over to God. Remember that.

If you truly see someone as your brother (or sister) in Christ, treat them like your brother or sister.

[*] Unless, perhaps, you happen to live on the African savannah.

I am not going to keep silent where I feel there is a problem. But again, don't take it as an insult, it is my opinion, and I am entitled to it. But yes, Antioch is in communion, canonical, etc........fine with me.

The jurisdiction morass was created by the Russsian Revolution. The Living Church set up by the soviets began to sue in American courts to gain control of the parishes in this country. That is when the Greeks and Arabs sought with just cause protection and clergy from their churches in the Old Countries.
If the EP gives up the GOA what does he have left? I think all of the Bishops in this country could be dispersed around the country. San Fransico has 3 Bishops! There is the GOA, ROCOR, and OCA ones that are there. The Diocese of the West in the OCA is huge geographically speaking, and as a result we hardly ever see His Grace.
The problems with unity in this country could be solved if the Mother Churches let us.

Very true Jeff. But I am sure there are also those that cling to an ethnicity as well. I think a lot of the Greeks would not be in favor of an American Orthodox Church.

Wasn't aware OCA had churches with no pews...:)
There are some. Our priest takes the faith and the church's traditions extremely seriously. When he got assigned to our parish there were pews (this was way before my conversion), he told me he had them out of there in a very short amount of time. My two favorite quotes of his pertinent to this topic are "2,000 years of Holy Tradition are not going to be changed in this parish" and "When you start to make changes to the Faith, how do you decide where to stop?"

We've actually had newcomers from other churches complain about the length of services and lack of pews. I'm not saying that lack of pews and long services makes us any more holy or that I'm pharasaical towards those that don't do those things, I'm just saying I'm fortunate that I converted in an extremely traditional parish.

Tell me about it. Archbishop Dmitri of Dallas and the South covers from Virginia in the north to New Mexico out west, and he's the exarch of Mexico. We hardly ever see him! Especially now that he's 81 years old!

The OCA parish in Greenville has no pews--Father Marcus warned me about it this morning. Apparently there are benches to sit on if one becomes tired, though.
We've got benches along the walls for the same thing.

You think all Catholics chose to be that way? Most are born into it...especially if their ancestors lived in the West.

Go in PEACE. Call me when the Pope lays aside the triple crown again.
God Bless!
Actually, he donated it. LOL :D

Peace!

You need to understand that most of the time RC's I have dealt with are zealous in their faith. I have no desire to argue or debate the issues. Nothing personal. I just get steamed up over the subject, so I would rather not go there.

God Bless You!

Tikon isn't there a division within ROCOR of those wanting to reestablish ties with ROC. I thought I read somewhere about a group that is against this happening

There are some Priests opposed to reunion with the Moscow patriarchate, mainly because of claims that some members of the Russian clergy are KGB, as was the last Patriarch under Soviet rule. As I said earlier, a lot of very bad things went down during that Godless revolution, and the ROCA was founded by mostly Russians who were tied in some way to Imperial Russia. I actually met a 98 year old man that was a member of the Preobrazensky Guards, (Personal Regiment of his Imperial Majesty, Tsar of all the Russias) and for many years, prayers for the return of the Autocracy were standard prayers in our church. But from my understanding, negotiations are in progress.

Written in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Holy Martyrdom of the Passion Bearers, the Holy Royal Martyrs Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra, Tsarevich Alexis, Grand Duchess Olga, Grand Duchess Tatiana, Grand Duchess Marie, & Grand Duchess Anastasia, & those with them.... 1918-1998

Troparion To The Royal Martyr Tsar Nicholas II (Tone 5)
Thou didst meekly endure the loss of an earthly kingdom,* and bonds and many sufferings from the fighters against God,* witnessing of Christ even unto death, * O great Passion-bearer and God-crowned Tsar Nicholas. * Wherefore Christ God did crown thee and thy Queen and children * with a martyr's crown in Heaven; * do thou entreat Him to have mercy on the Russian land * and to save our souls.

Hey Catherine,

A "Katherine" here....

If you want some "Orthodoxy 101" type apologetics, check out my website... http://stienekel.tripod.com/

It was designed for my Protestant family, but I would imagine it might have whatever info you'd like to know....

God bless you!
