Amisk - if you avoid joining a denomination because some of its believers don't live up to its beliefs, I think you'll be non-denom the rest of your life ;) You have some good points though.

Uniform... I'm a soldier. I don't own a uniform. I do, however, own a number of SA tshirts. I've noticed that the tshirts get at least as much recognition as the uniform - probably more among the under-30s. Frankly, a SA uniformed soldier is difficult to distinguish from a security guard unless he's wearing the hat! :) (DON'T get me started on my 'new SA uniform' rant!)

Anyway - for positive attention and conversation starters, try wearing a tshirt with a salvo shield on the front and the I'll fight quote on the back ;)

In the Flame:

I think your views are a growing feeling among many Salvationists. I would hazarded a guess that with in the next 25 years the uniform will be gone. Personally I think it will be a sad day and likely the beginning to the end of a great organization.

I work with the local Salvation Army, although I am not a member of the corp. I am required to wear a ball cap with the logo on the front of it. During a local flood I wore the emgerncy T.shirt and I wear the cap proudly, as I did the T. shirt.

One of the things I have noticed while working about the city is that folks with no afillation to the army or any church group will often step up and offer to help me carry boxes etc, because they know that I'm with the Salvation Army and not some local carriage company. Had I been in street clothes they would not have offered to help me.

A friend has had young kids who were lost in stores etc. come to him because they recongized the uniform.

Maybe you only wear the uniform to church on Sunday but I have been to funerals and other gatherings where I have met Salvationists in full uniform, minus the hat and they stood out. Folks at the same gathering often sought them out just to talk because they were in uniform.

while I haven't joined or have a uniform I expect that some time down the road the Newf. and I will join and we will proudly wear the uniform.

As for the differnce in the doctrine, I can live either way. What I want to see is the army returning to the doctrine of holiness that it once taught. That is not just an army problem. It is a Evangelical Holiness problem. It will only be reversed when we receive a Holy Ghost Revival in the Evangelical Church, until that time I will work with in what ever Evangelical church that is closest to me and whom I feel most comfortable working with.

Hello to everybody at the cyber corps, it's good to meet you.

Andy,
Thanx for your reply and also for the blessings!!
I go to a 'lil ole' corps in Essex, Wickford, which seeing as you are at Selby you may have heard of through Michael and Jackie, or were they before your time at the corps?

They were indeed before my time at Selby, although I have heard of them. In fact I believe they are due to visit shortly (note to self, pay more attention during seargent majors announcements).

If your intended wifey is not a Christian then you are outside of the will of God in this marriage.

I never said that Mel was not a Christian;)

Sorry to be so straight forward, but Christian young people make a major mistake if they marry non-Christians.

I will be 40 this year. Don't get called 'young' too often these days.:D :D :D

They end up living a life of compromise in order to keep the marriage together and usually sentence their children to hell in the process.

A touch extreme perhaps

Even if both partners are Christians but determined to go to separate churches it also means compromise and division. Marriages seldom work well when they begin on division since it means the children to have decide which parent's set of values to follow.

We will not be having children. Mel's daughters are both adults ans she says she has now "Done her bit for society":D

So, no worries on that score.

Religion is one of the biggest dividers in ending Christian marriages these days.

I too am wondering what do concerning joining the Army. I like much about it. I am a firm believer that the Uniforms are good if the folks wearing them live up to the standards the uniform represents. They are like a bumper sticker on your car. If you are going to wear one you had better be sure your life measures up.

While my wife and I both attend the Army, she doesn't think she wants to join at this time and I don't feel at liberty to join without her. (my choice).

There is an incorrect assumption amongst many non salvationists that you have to be in uniform to 'belong'.

This is not the case. You will be more than welcome to worship at the Army, ad infinitum, either in or out of uniform.

I also have some questions in my own mind about the Army. I question their stand on baptism and communion.

So do many Salvationists, but that's another story

Then I wonder at some of the life style of some of the folks, where it seems that they are trying to live both sides of the fence. I note too that much of the opposition to the uniforms is among the youth and at times I wonder how much longer the uniform will be around.

Not quite sure of the point you are trying to make here. What do you mean by trying to live both sides of the fence?

As for opposition to the uniform, that appears to be a greater problem in some countries than in others. The UK does not seem to have too much of a probvlem (yet) in that area. But Being a Salvationist and wearing the uniform do not have to go hand in hand. Never have, and never will.

I note that the uniform stands out among non Christians and it is well respected there, especially among return vets. Most vets. I have met have far more respect for the Sally Ann (as they often refer to the Army) than they do for the Red Cross.

I shall leave it in the Lord's hands for now and I may or may not join later on.

The Army is a church, not the local golf club. It is not something you join.

The decision as to whether or not to wear uniform is based on what you feel God's will for your life is. It is not a 'joining' issue.

At the moment I am not in uniform, but I am a member of the Salvatin Army, in that the Army is the place I worship. I am going back into uniform because I believe that it is were God id leading me. It will not make me any more or less of 'member'.

I'll keep you both in my prayers Amisk. Follow where God leads, be that the Army of elsewhere.

"Just where H needs me, my Lord has placed me.
Just where He needs me, there would I be.
And since He's found me, By love He's bound me,
To serve Him joyfully"

O my goodness! I turn my back for a few days and all this happens!

Excellent news! It cant be any harder to be a uniformed soldier married to a christian attending another church, than it can be being the Envoy married to a non christian, surely! I think you will cope!

I agree. I think God know's what He's doing here.....:)

I would both agree and disagree here.

I disagree about the uniform. In the UK at least, I believe the uniform is alive and well and will continue to be so.

I do think Amisk has a point, to an extent, when he says we need to get back to basics with regard to our message. I'm not saying we shouldn't be contempory, we should. Jesus was contempory, so if we are to claim to be followers of Jesus, we must be also.

(See Tracy. I was only joking about the bonnet;) )

But we must also be careful not to chuck out the baby with the bathwater.

i do disagree with having to wear the tunics in meeetings where it is warm and some people disagree with that. But as times are changing so is the uniform for younger people. I aint wearing my uniform lately as i havent been well but i am wearing it soon after i get treatment.

Some 'senior' Salvationists say that you should think yourself lucky that you never had to wear the old high neck uniforms.:D

Personally, I like the tunic, and will wear it with pride once again.

It is nice to be in shirt sleeves in summer though, with shirt mounted epaulettes.

Polo shirts as part of Sunday uniform though....

*Shudders* It's not Army ;)

The Salvation Army uniform is neat! On ladies, it looks very feminine, like a lady's suit. (Ok, I admit, it's not warm enough during the very cold winter though brrrrrr) There's one thing about the ladies' uniform though: I don't like that melon-shaped hat. I wish some designer would design a nice hat for the ladies...

The men look very gentlemanly in the uniform - well, I think men in uniform look very nice, generally! ;) :D

I personally find the high collar uniforms of times past very nice!
