By the way, drierwerf, I wonder if anyone has done a study on how many Christians are withholding medical treatment on their children because they interpret Luke 5:31 like you do?

Any idea?

May I assume you're proud of them?

Let me say one more thing on this, drierwerf, then I'll shut my mouth.

My parents always took me to the doctor when I was ill; and back in those days, they didn't have people like you standing around ridiculing them for it.

(Not that I know of, anyway.)

Oh, I see -- it's a metaphor.

So we shouldn't go to the doctor because Jesus was just speaking metaphorically in this passage?

I have a feeling that interpreting the Bible metaphorically is dangerous -- especially if you guys are doing it.

(And what happened to my question about Luke? or did you take that as rhetoric?)

Well, aparantly, quote mining is the hallmark of the chrisian.

I clearly wrote

Quote mining your own bible, you are.
Jesus is there speaking by metaphore or by analogy.

Yes, I stand by what I said. Jesus was using there a metaphor (or rather an analogy). The fact that you even make your bible say things it doesn't, says much about you respect for your own "holy book".

And did I ever suggest that you have to bey your bible (or, in your case, your failing interpretation of the bible)? No.

No, you don't have to inflate that to the rest of the bible, as you do. I didn't write such a thing, I didn't meant such a thing and you have not to distort my words that way.

Yes, AV1611VET. You may be proud of yourself, standing in the same line as Kent Hovind, Michale Behe, Paul Abramson, Ken ham, Andrew Schlafly, VenomfangX. All these guys have been repeatedly and systematically caught quote mining, distorting words, twisting facts, telling blatant lies and showing a general tendency for dishonesty. Aparantly there is no other way to defend christianity than to resort to such tactics. This says much about christians.

Just ignoring the bible and acting in accordance with common sense is very often a good thing.

Metaphor or not, I shouldn't have to draw ridicule for going to the doctor.

But that's your prerogative, and you have the right to do so.

Do you stand by those who withhold medical assistance for their sick children or not?

Ya -- you said that once before.

That old Catch-22 you guys like to try to put us in.

Either we turn our backs on medical treatment, so we won't be a hypocrite; or we accept medical treatment in spite of what you think the Bible says.

Got it.

For your information, even Jesus was taken to the doctor -- I'll do the same, thank you.

Jesus went to see a doctor? Doesn't that strike you as bit strange? It's a while since I picked up a bible so I can't remember that episode myself, but I'll take your word for it. Doesn't the idea of jesus going to see a doctor seem a bit of a silly one to you? I hope I never get the ailment Jesus had. Sounds serious.

What passage did you have in mind, AVET, about Jesus being taken to a doctor? I assume you mean taken to be healed rather than just popping in for a chat. I've read the Bible quite a few times and the NT in particular at least a dozen times and I can't remember him needing to see a doctor. I may be wrong though. ;)

Luke 2:21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb;

I thought Rabbis, not doctors, performed circumcisions back in the day? (many still do.)

Creationists are very much alike with the alien conspiracy fanatics. Both have this need to believe in something that has no evidence to back it up (statistically Aliens do exist in the universe and this IMO is true. This does not mean that they have secret bases on the moon and are in collusion with evil governments on Earth).

Creationists are people who take the creation myth as fact and believe in the Bible in a literal sense. The vast majority of Christians take the Bible as a spiritual guide rather than as a 'technical manual'.

IMO creationism does not belong in a science class. People who try to impose creationism as a science are basically doing a disservice to erudition.
