  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Did you know that many people have resistance to their own insulin and they don't even know it? (meaning they could have diabetes or eventually will if they don't lay off the lard..)-- And they think it could be caused by being overweight and eating alot of high fat foods.

I explain it to patients an even simpler way: their pancreas gland (which produces insulin) works well if they take a healthy diet. If they abuse their pancreas by over eating and/or binge eating, they might end up diabetic.

And tell them to exercise. Oh nevermind I'm sure you do.

Oops yes of course... exercise... gulp

It doesn't hurt anyone to go over 65 grams of fat a day ONCE IN A WHILE. I'm 5'7" 120lb and I am sure I eat more fat than that regularly.

Going to McDonalds and eating a salad (which you know has 51 grams of fat because they tell you on the leaflets) on a regular basis - thats asking for trouble.

Unless of course you don't read the leaflets (blame your gluttony on illiteracy), and your country has laws which allow 51g-of-fat salads to be marketed as healthy (blame your gluttony on useless advertising laws).

I would never make a good doctor. I'd say to my patients...'lay off the lard and get off your rear.' My bedside manner would be horrible.

A good bedside manner doesn;t mean pandering to peoples weaknesses.
I regularly tell patients that they might die if they don't lay off the booze / smoking / doughnuts.

The only thing I can't deal with is unwanted pregnancy. Here's the brutal truth and the reason I couldn't do obs and gobs: The rape victims make me cry; and the teenagers who have casual sex and ask for the abortion pill bring out so little sympathy in me, I have been known to mutter 'dirty slapper' once out of their earshot. Shameful yet true.

Back to the fat people however - I used to work for one of the surgeons who does gastric banding procedures. And I have a LOT of respect for the fat people who DID get off their rears and lose weight before their ops.

I remember one time a girl came into a clinic that I was working at, this is when I worked for an endocrinologist. She was diabetic, and she was pregnant, she was also slightly mentally retarded. She got pregnant by a scum bag dirtball who told her since they were friends they could have sex together because that is what friends do. PIG! Anyway, the doc that I worked for immediately referred her to the OB doctor , and one of the other techs, I will never forget this, took her aside and gave her the number to an abortion clinic. (without the doctor knowing). At the time I hadn't zelously embraced Christianity like I do now, and I often think of her and her baby and pray for them. I don't know what happened. But you reminded me of them just now.

I work with a girl who just had one. She has lost alot of weight and she feels much better. :)

I never been to a drive through, but if you go into a McDonalds restaurant here, the leaflets are on a rack on the counter, and on the wall by the straws.
I'm sure if you ask nicely, they'll give you one at the drive through. I can't guarentee they won't look at you weird, but they'll probablly get you one.

"I'll take a jumbo sized box of chicken mcnugetts, extra large fries, double bic mac, a chocolate sunday (fried if possible), an extra large Coke, hold the ice, and one of those nutrition pamphlets. I'm watching my weight."

Well I don't think gluttony has to do with food only.

For instance, when I was spending 8 hours a day on the computer and not doing anything else, THAT was gluttony.
Ok, so how do you determine how much is gluttony?

If you spend 7 hour a day on the computer, would that be gluttony? How about 6? 5?... Whenever I hear most people talk about gluttony, it seems like they just pick an arbitrary value as to determine what is too much.

Well I suppose it would be different for everyone. For me, it was the lack of what was getting done in my ordinary life that clued me in. Perhaps it isn't so much what I was doing (playing on the computer) that is important, but why I was doing it. (avoidance of real life to some extent)--

So, if someone eats to the point that they're gaining weight at a rapid pace or if they are using it as a way to console themselves or whatever.. I'd say it could be unhealthy, but I think it varies with everyone. And there is probably an underlying issue involved. Know what I mean, man? :)

The Church Fathers say we may sin with gluttony in food in four ways, as the Scholastics (including Thomas Aquinas) say. -

"Prae-propere, laute, nimis, ardenter, studiose"
too soon, too expensively, too much, too eagerly, too daintily.

These are the guidelines with gluttony in food. You can eat only one egg, but if you fret and make people go through hell and high water to get you it just right, it's gluttony. This is too daintily.

If you have inordinately expensive tastes on a regular basis (I'm not talking about a nice dinner with your spouse or a special occaision) it is gluttony with food. This is too expensively.

Overeating is gluttony, as in, when you are already definitely sure you are full, and yet eat more. This is too much.

If you gulp down your food and don't take breathing space, it is gluttony. Many of the saints in their penances made a penance not out of fasting, but many times just eating slower with the same amount of food, which helps them discipline and mortify their appetites. This is too greedily.

You commit gluttony in eating too soon are those who eat in unopportune times, usually breaking hospitality when it comes to guests.

Good table manners is a subject covered in Ecclesiasticus. I would look up that.

Here is newadvent on it. It's a good article. As many of you have already observed, there is a spiritual gluttony that John of the Cross speaks of, which can be common among beginners in the life of grace.

Thanks for the info Iraneus. I tend to eat too fast sometimes, so this is good info for me to have. :)
