I do not to understand why some have the tenacity to believe that our own personal experience ever justifies anything, or convinces another that we are trust-worthy. Testimonies such as:
"I use to be a _____ but now I'm a _____ after struggling and intensively studying the Scriptures and believe that the entire Bible shows x,y,z to be wrong and a,b,c to be right. I am convicted by the Holy Spirit that this is the Truth, so follow my example..."
The Bible says this and that, and thats why I stand in this theology and soterology for my faith.
Then you have people that claim just because they have been to x,y,z that they have arrived at a,b,c, and urge others to trust them. Is this not putting confidence in ones own flesh and possibly deceived faith? Alas, such dejection should not be in my heart though.
Word of mouth, and testimony is no good, at least back up experience with the foundation of Scripture. Sure, it can be an encouragement to some, yet it is used time and time again as a form of apologetics, of evangelism, to emphasizes experiencing God and exalting man, than Scripture. One cannot really comment on except question their approach to hermeneutics, upbringing and social condition. More often than not the scriptural verses used are taken out of context or from a [accused to be] unbiblical school of thought/liberal theology.
Sorry for seem to be ranting a bit, but this just came to mind, after glossing through several forums, and having conversations with professed believers =p. Just keep exhorting them with the Word , right?
