I agree it does look like it could be a ghost story. Actually, a lot people believe it is.
Except the Bible refers to the event as a "vision".

Matthew 17:9 KJV
9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

The word used there is horama, which means "to see spiritually or mentally". In other words, what they saw wasn't really there.

What is a vision? Jesus was talking to them. Does that mean what they saw was not real? Does it mean they were able to see that which is not a physical manifestation? Is it possible that people are seeing visions of their deceased loved ones? Is a vision less real?

A vision is not real at all. It exists only in your mind.

Well, a vision is not played out physically in front of you for others to see as well, but you really do see it in your mind. The way you worded it could mean no visions are real; if you see one in your mind, you're crazy. LOL

I think i understand what you are saying as far as it not being a physical manifestation. But that doesn't mean they weren't really there. It means they were able to perceive what did not consist of material substance. Which in this case, they were with Jesus and they were talking to him, but in other cases, could be a visual message of sorts.

Now that's a whole different can of worms. XD

Like where to draw the line as to what is a self-imposed vision vs a vision received from an outside source.

Matthew 4
8Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10

I wonder if the devil can communicate visions. I wonder if spirits in general can communicate visions. Now that's a scary thought. XD

I guess you could say it's as real as a dream, except in the case of a vision it comes from God and you're not sleeping.

Right. I've had them.

I do not believe there are ghost. Demons.. fallen angels yes. Been here how long? Can ( the fallen angels) can make them selfs to look like an angel of light.

That being said. When I moved to Colordo.. my mom said it would be nice if we were there with her. Her husband had cancer (my dad died of bone cancer). So we did. Well we stayed with them for some time. one night I go to the bathroom.. the hall light was on.. wow.. well I watch this black yet see through thing walk through the house.. looked at me and keep going. Now.. I DONT Know how I knew but I KNEW what it was thinking.. I MEANT NOTHING to it.. I was NOTHING.. I was a believer and haha that POWER OF GOD JESUS IN ME...yeah.. right out the window..oh is one thing to say it when NOTHING Is happening..

Anyway.. truth be told.. for the next week I ALWAYS had that light ON! I was scared haha.. THEN. I KNEW it was no person.. not some man/woman that died. I believe we go up to be with the Father or we go to some place to be held till judgment.

I STILL can't get past how.. I was NOTHING to it.. I didnt matter at all. I HEAR stories about heaven and take it with a grain of salt. How they say.. you dont have to speak.. you just know somethings about the other. Not everything. That was what it was like.. I just knew it was thinking.. I was nothing.. didnt like that at all haha. This was one moment and .. I CANT apply it to all.. anyway.. JESUS IS LORD!

What do you think it was? And why did you mean nothing?

Those shadow things sound more common than one might expect. And no, those aren't the kind of beings i was referencing. But they sound quite nasty. Person was telling me how one tried to choke several people in their house on different nights.

So why did they say they thought he was a "spirit"? You yourself said you can't see a spirit, so how was it that they all saw him with their eyes and still thought he was a "spirit"? Why didn't Jesus correct them and tell them there is no such things as spirits one can see?

Firstly, the word in that passage is not spirit. It's the Greek word phantasma. It means an appearance or an apportion. You have to remember that they were in a storm and scared. They saw something, but did not know what they were seeing. We can't can't ask Jesus or the apostles what they thought or why Jesus didn't tell them something. All we have is what is written in the text.

phantasma. noun. 1. A supernatural being, such as a ghost: apparition, bogey, bogeyman, bogle, eidolon, ghost,
phantasm, phantom, revenant, shade, shadow, specter, spirit, visitant, wraith.

I think it's fair to conclude they thought they saw a spirit, but spirit is more of a generic term and i don't think its would be safe to assume that they specifically thought they saw the spirit of a person who died., aka a ghost

What were your visions?

The first one I ever had I can still see in my mind. There was a large grassland with a strip of small buildings like a western town far in the distance. In the middle of this grassland (dry grass) was a large round silo type structure made of glass that went from the ground straight up into the clouds. As I looked at the structure, about 2/3 of the way up was what looked like a hairball, except it was a mass of snakes. The revelation knowledge was that it was my sin. My sin had clogged the pipe and the blessings of God could not reach me. That was the night I repented of all sin and wanted to be completely cleansed. It was also the first time I ever heard God's voice, and felt the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It was like warm oil was being poured over my head and engulfed me all the way down to my feet. When the sin was removed I felt light as a feather. I even looked at my feet to see if they were still on the ground.

Anyway, that was the first.
