  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

If anyone is planting a garden this year, it would be great to see your pictures as it progresses.

I planted seeds for the spring garden a couple weeks back. Onions, spinach, collards, three kinds of lettuce, cabbage, and turnips. I live in zone 7. It's been warm and rainy, so I took the risk to plant. It might frost before we get out of April, but these are generally cold hardy plants, so long as it isn't prolonged. These pics are a couple days old, but they are already starting to pop. :)

I was finally able to plant cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini squash, green beans, and tomatoes. It had been wet, but it dried out enough this weekend to get some seeds and starters in the ground.

My home garden is a work in progress, the first pic was a dump for rubble we cleared of bricks and concrete nearly 3 years ago now. I’ve been mixing in sheep manure, compost and other fertilisers for a couple of years now and the soil is improving. The spring onions are ready to eat and the lettuce is getting there. I’ve got beetroots under the string and CD contraption (it keeps the birds off) but my seeds are getting old and only a few of them have germinated so far. I’ve got spinach and red onions coming up at the back, and the bare space is for some courgette (zucchini) seedlings I’ve got growing in pots.

I’ve set aside a couple of beds in partial shade in the orchard, where the soil is better. I’ve got radishes and different salad leaves for a quick turn around in the first, where peppers and tomatoes will go later, and leeks and celeriac in the one at the back.

Looks like we’ll have a good fruit harvest this year:

What is the fruit? Cherries?

In the main pic yeah. We’ve got apples, pears, raspberries, nectarines and a couple of peach trees on the other side of the house.

My mother-in-law makes compotes and cordials with some of it, I might make some jam this year. My in-laws live just around the corner so a fair amount of it gets eaten fresh too.

Tried freezing some raspberries last year but it didn’t work well. Hence the plan to try jam this year.

I haven't learned to can, yet. I've always been leary of pressure cookers. My aunt said she did everything with a water bath, but I don't trust that for some things, e.g. tomatoes. Give me a minute and I'll think of another excuse, haha. I just need to jump in there and do it.

Wow these are quite the gardens. Public Hermit, how to you keep the bunnies and deer out? No fence?

BTW I found a surprise in my deck strawberries.
