  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hakrev, this is simple and it will make sense once you understand how your body works! Your body needs fuel to run, ie: food! If you don't eat, your metabolism will slow down to conserve the fuel. Once your metabolism slows, you either don't lose weight or you will gain it. So, you've got to keep your metabolism constantly working - the best way is to feed your body small frequent and low fat meals/snacks and to burn calories by being active and building muscle. Hope that helps!

I've done the eat a bunch of small things everyday thing and it didn't work so well, Infact the only thing that has ever helped me lose alot of weight was just drinking water and very small snakes once everyday and working out in the gym everyday too. Although I did lose like 50 lbs on this diet, the minute I began eating 3 meals again all the weight came back instantly. I'm starting to get very discouraged by it all! Thank you for your help though wolflilly! Currently I'm also on weight watcher's, but I'll have to wait a little longer to see if I get any results from it or not!

Fifty pounds - that's good! I hope w.w. helps you -I truly believe we benefit from having someone to be accountable to and being supported by friends and family - it makes a world of difference in our motivation to stick with eating and exercise plans. I wish you the best - keep at it. Don't give up!!

If you are a hard gainer/ectomorph, then you are genetically predisposed to being underweight. Without seeing you I would guess that you are long boned and small framed. I bet that you can take your middle finger and thumb and wrap them around your wrist and they will over lap. I would even guess that you sun burn easy, and that you have a hard time relaxing. Let me know how accurate I am here.
That describes me accurately :).

I've been drinking some homemade weight gain shakes to gain weight. The key is consuming more calories than you usually do.

In a blender combine:

1 cup whole milk
2 tablespoons natural peanut butter
1 cup oats
1-2 scoops whey protein
(1 banana for flavor)

Blend and chug. Over 700 calories.

My brother-in-law was going through medical treatments and to maintain his weight he forced himself to eat a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich every night. He ate regular during the day so the p&J was additional and packed with protein and fat. It worked for him. God bless you.

Same boat, 5'11", 130lbs. I would eat a fourth meal at night but all the restaurants close at 10 here, so I eat biscuits instead which can't be very good. (I can't make anything myself here, no kitchen or ability.) Which of those shakes taste the best? I bought one but it wasn't pleasant forcing it down.

As far as shakes go you can buy the canned pre-made variety, dry pre-mixed that you add water/milk to... or you can make your own like these: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/proteinshakes.htm Protein and nutritional bars are a handy albeit expensive way to get additional calories into your diet without the hastle to cooking something from scratch. If you don't have access to a kitchen though you can always just keep a loaf of whole grain bread and jar of natural/lowfat peanut butter under the bed to. ;)

The hard part for you, Broken Doll, is being able to eat properly on a regular basis. Give me a breakdown of what you eat in one day. Keep a piece of paper and a pen handy and every time you eat, jot it down. Come back to the board and post it. Its hard to give advice without knowing exactly what's going on.

It would be like taking your car to a mechanic and saying it won't start. If he just told you to put gas in it, that wouldn't be very specific and could be overlooking the real cause. From everything you have posted so far, you seem to have a fast metabolism. There are several ways to put you on the path to gaining healthy weight. The best one will be determined by several things. So write down your food intake and let us know what your exercise habits are like. Do you participate in one sport, many sports, no sports?

I'll be happy to help if I can :)

I was wondering, does anyone know a good way to gain weight? I am really thin (100lbs.) and I have a fast metabolism, so it's hard for me to gain weight. My younger sister even weighs more than me and she teases me like saying I'm anorexic and that I through up my food. Does anyone have some advice?

You should keep track of what you're eating for 3 days straight and then show your doctor who may want to get a nutritional assessment if they are worried.

Milk shakes with ice cream, protein powder and peanut butter should help you to put on the pounds.

Are you on any meds that are causing it as well?

Eat cheese and crackers or peanut butter crackers as often snacks in between meals.

You sound a bit like me broken doll. I'm 5'4" and I used to weigh 95lbs. I was teased about my weight at school...amoungst other things, they used to say "Don't touch her, you might snap her" and "The wind will blow her away". I desperately wanted to try to gain weight and I did what some of these folks here have suggested...I ate fatty foods or more food than my normal three meals a day. It didn't work at all. That's not to say that it won't work for you though...it just didn't do anything for me. What did work for me though was time. As I've gotton older it has become easier for me to gain weight and I have gained. I'm now no longer underweight, for once in my life I'm actually a healthy weight for my height. I've made no specific changes to my diet during that time either. So don't worry too much about eating loads of fatty foods...if anything that could be detrimental to your health. Eat a healthy balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables to ensure your body gets the nutrients it needs and you'll probably find that with time your body sorts itself out.

Hi,
I order to gain weight you must:

Have your (BMR) Tested by a professional. This is your Basil Metabolic Rate. This will tell you the number of calories your body consumes everyday. Add 500 healthy calories per day to this number. Eat 5 to 6 small meals per day before 7pm.
This should consist of 3 meals and 2 snacks -healthy snacks.

Add a weight training program to your routine at least 2 to 3 times per week and you've got it. See exercise.about.com for more info.

Don't drink protien shakes or high carbohydrate drinks without working out. Unused carbs will be stored in your body as fat! You'll end up flabby.

God Bless,
