• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I actually linked over here from FSTDT... so I haven't read the whole thread and I've never participated in this part of the CF

Well be sure to read the forum guidelines here before you jump in....
this is basically a 'protected' area on CF (I think it's the only protected area), and it's not like the other forum areas where anyone can just debate -
non fundamentalists can hang out & fellowship, not get into disagreement type discussions as far as I remember the rules?

Just a heads up for you =)

Wanna quote me? :D

Oddly enough...
FSTDT is what made me decide to start participating here at CF. I initially read so many horribly things quoted from the forums that I thought I should come over and at least through my opinion in.
I have been surprised and delighted to find that the majority of people who participate here are lovely, intelligent, compassionate people. However, there are a few worth quoting for sure.
There is insanity and stupidity on both sides... so don't think I'm going to defend all atheists either.

It's not the only protected area. WWMC (which I consider one of my home forums) is a protected area for LGBT folk, and Jamie, you might like to come hang out there.

Yeah, FSTD folks are a bit over the top. Most folks here are pretty nice. I hang out mostly in GA, Politics, CA, and Ethics. Hope to see you around.

I tend to stick to
http://christianforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=40
Ethics & Morality
and
http://christianforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=746
Debates on Homosexuality

though, where do i find the rules for this section? I must be missing it. I don't see it.
(Edit: found it!)

Also, what is WWMC?
WWMC stands for Whomsoever Will, May Come. It's the Liberal Forum under the Faith Groups section. There are a number of LGBT regulars.

http://christianforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=401

I mostly stay away from the dedicated debate forums. I like to have friendly discussions, not debates. But I also stay away from the purely social forums... I have little interest in just socializing when it isn't about anything.

See... I'm a big fan of formal debate. (Not be be confused with insane ranting). I like to examine the arguments and assumptions, to discuss definitions and reasoning, and to explore everyone's point of view.

I work at a large scientific research institution in a very liberal area, so I'm very well versed in both the way science is actually done and GLBT issues. Hence the reason I hit up the sub-forums that I do.

One thing... in defense of FSTDT
I find the comment responses to be hysterical. Though I know it is sometimes in bad taste, the way some of those folks mock the off-base fundie stuff gets me laughing so hard. People are going to mock no matter what, I would prefer they mock over there, rather than come over here to mock you all personally. That would just be rude.

That's cool. Different strokes for different folks.

I've done my share and more of formal debating, but I got burnt out on it.

Aye, that's a good point.

so much for "do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
Mocking is only funny when you aren't the brunt of the joke.

Sorry to be a party pooper on it, but I think enjoying mockery sets a person's attitude to find it easy to ridicule people and focus on others faults instead of on their own (which our voyeristic reality tv shows are pushing more and more with the dysfunctional people)

How much time do these people spend ridiculing others? For many no doubt it's a hobby & they just fuel each other's fire.
It does affect their character & personalities over time as they continue mistreating others as if they're subhuman (whether they "deserve" it or not).
& the people who do the mocking rarely stop to think that their views & fantacism are just as easy to make fun of and attack by others.
Anyone can find things to point and laugh about in every single one of us.

It's basically unloving and unmerciful - continuing in that type of setting can't be good for anyone involved in it over time.
I say the same of fundamentals that could make sites ridiculing liberals & atheists/agnostics etc.
I don't think it's healthy for anyone on any side of the fence they're on.

Just my 5 cents

Anybody ever been there? (Warning: It's an anti-fundy site. If mockery or naughty language offend you, don't go there.)

I just found out one of my online remarks is quoted there. (From another board, where I post as X777.)

When I heard I was quoted there, I was actually a bit disappointed to find that the quote they found so objectionable was really fairly tame.

I wonder if there a counter to this site. Like liberals says the darndest things or something.

There might well be, but as Nadiine pointed out, mockery isn't really constructive, no matter which side you're on.

Yep I don't mind some good sarcasm lol, but the mockery & ridicule is basic hatred being vented & I do think there's a difference.
I don't know ... some people find sarcasm is just as hateful, I don't becuz I know when I use it, I'm not hating people, I'm exhaggerating a point I think needs to be brought to attn. (usually).

As I think about it, how would it look to people who see Christians making fun of nonChristians stupid remarks and hatefilled comments?

I think it would show a wrong spirit - certainly not love or mercy.
If there was one, I know I wouldn't be involved with it in any way.

yes I've been there. In fact some of my quotes have been put on there. I find it sad though because it seems a good amount of people on that site are almost too far away and reprobate to see the truth. Hopefully they will repent
