For Canada at least, I think the ill-will this has created among Canadian citizens will be long-lasting. All those US vacations and plane flights are not going to suddenly come back. American liquor and other products? We'll just see what the trade imbalance looks like. If that was the goal, since the US was 'subsidizing' Canada, this solution is not likely to fix it.
This part of the non-monitary effect of Trump's game-paying with tariffs. The relationship between the US and trading partners has weakened, as the US is seen as untrustworthy. Many from Canada who would have traveled to the US to Florida, and Arizona did not come. Flights are lost, and the businesses that benefited lose. American whiskey's won't just bounce back.
I heard in the last hour that Microsoft canceled plans for a production factory in Ohio.

And it is only a 90 days pause. So will he put us through it again?

FWIW - Lincoln was so loved - he was assassinated by a Democratic Party supporter.
Attempt at a low blow noted. It is pathetic of you.
Not a member of the current Democratic Pary since Johnson's day. Boothe's views were more like Republicans these days as the Southern Democrats ended up going to the Republican party for Nixon.

Yes, the Southern strategy existed.

OH MY! now what will all those 30 somethings do while they live in their parents basement.
What are all those Vets fired from their government jobs going to do? How does increased inflation from a 10% tariff help housing when the interest rate does not go down during inflation?

Any idea why people around the world are selling US Treasuries? Do you know the #1 holder of US treasuries is China? #2 is Japan, who is a bit angry at Trump right now.

Off topic and long, long debunked.

Lol nice antiquated view of gamers there, grandpa. Clearly only total losers care about video games.

Yeah, countries like Zimbabwe and Madagascar and other countries will desperately try to get relief from tariffs, and it looks like Trump backed down on many of tariffs as many of his wealthy backers were having a fit, and his approval ratings dropped.

Approximately $8 trillion was lost in the last few days. That is not so good.
FOXnews correspondent Charlie Garparino on why Trump backed off the tariffs, and it has to do with the sell off of US Treasurys

Countries around the world are selling their US treasuries, though maybe China is keeping theirs. Don't know but will keep looking for information about it.

And just like that the stock market matters again. No longer a zombie on life support.

I'd be betting against the market and their blip of hopium. Some on Wall Street just don't get it. Trump is not a clever businessman, he just played one on TV, and there's no "there" there in the first place. Just a senile old man that thinks and talks at a 5th grade level. As long as Trump is in office, we will continue to lurch from one crisis to another, all of which will impact the economy.

Nasdaq Soars to Best Day Since 2001 After Trump Pauses Some Tariffs

U.S. hits China with additional levies, puts others on hold as trade war shifts

So here's the real question: are you FOR Trump's tariffs, or against?
Are you WITH him, or against him?

You don't get to celebrate the stock market going up while Trump's goals of MAGA are going down!
According to MAGA doctrine - overseas people bad - Americans good - must only buy American - trade bad.

Donald Trump’s announcement of reciprocal tariffs, scheduled to take effect April 2, predictably flummoxed globalists and free traders alike. Yet in fact, both groups should be thrilled. The real question is why they didn’t think of it first.
(And yes, there’s an answer to that.)

'...What’s going to happen is other countries are going to have to follow Trump’s footsteps,” Chang said Wednesday on NewsNation. “Trump’s tariffs close off the U.S. market to many Chinese products. China’s got to sell them someplace else… other countries’ industrial sectors are going to be decimated unless they protect their country.”

Chang, author of the new book “Plan Red: China’s Project to Destroy America,” said he expects to see tariffs rise on Chinese goods worldwide as countries defend their markets from potential product dumping'
...
The analyst also highlighted the strategic benefits of moving manufacturing away from China, suggesting that relocating factories to Central America could help stabilize those societies and reduce migration pressures to the United States.

Chang emphasized the importance of bringing critical industries like semiconductor fabrication and pharmaceuticals back to the U.S., arguing that trade with China indirectly funds their military development.

“China uses our trade proceeds to configure its military, which is basically designed to fight America,” Chang said. “That’s just morally and strategically wrong to give them the money to do that.”

Hey, it's Gordon "China will collapse in 2011, no 2012, no 2016, no 2017, no 2019, any day now...." Chang.

Anything that Mr Chang says about China needs to be taken with a grain of salt roughly the size of Olympus Mons. He sees things in the most simplistic, binary terms and despite his supposed expertise his analysis of Chinese geopolitical approaches, the Communist Party/Chinese internal politics and Xi Jinping's policies have repeatedly and consistently missed the mark.

What have I heard on these forums?
Exclamations galore!
Stuff like "Finally - a President with backbone!"
"It's about time - the world has been trading unfair with America forever!"
Oh - and Trump was pleased because world leaders were lining up to 'kiss' him apparently - somewhere....

And he was never, ever going to BACK DOWN!

1744262242610.png

Here we go! American factories everywhere, independence, MAGA - all of it!

It's tariff day people!

Except... oh wait... whaaaaaat?

1744262546466.png

Oh. So no tariffs on most of us then. Stockmarket panic, world leaders lining up - MAGA types finding rationales to put tariffs on allies - anger at the borders - a massive global increase in anti-American sentiment.

At least if the tariffs had stayed the rest of the world would have been reminded of Economics 101 and what NOT to do! But ... we don't get to see that.

Trump backs down.

No backbone.

It was all for nothing.

Way to climb halfway out of a hole you didn't need to dig, Donald!

(He could have just put tariffs on China alone at the start? And - like - NOT annoyed most of America's former allies?)

Seriously - is this guy OK? Is it time for the 25th yet? And a review of Presidential powers so more than one person has their finger on this button?

And rather crude - his comments about world leaders lining up to kiss my a$$ are just immature and a sad sign of his personality disorder.

Yes, very sad. From talking admiringly about a dead golfing pro's sexual member, to the latest potty-mouthed rants, he's just a deranged, fouth-mouthed old man. That kind of thing fits the pattern of dementia and senility.

If he cared about anything like a legacy, he should never have run for president.

Apparently, you might not know about "The Art of the Deal." Also, I am certain that President Trump has far more "backbone" than the previous president. Whereas most conservatives had already known and understood about Trump's negotiating skills and the reasons for those tariffs.

Apparently, you might not know about "The Art of the Deal."

Trump didn't write that book. He had a ghostwriter, Tony Schwartz. Schwartz had one interview with Trump, where Trump gave some of his thoughts about his own business strategies, but most of it was written by Schwartz.

The whole thing was a scheme to promote his own brand. Trump actually didn't run hardly any businesses in the usual sense, he's a confidence man or barker that gets other investors to put up most of the money for his building projects, then he leaves other people with the responsibilities of figuring out how to make money off the projects, as long as his brand name is kept on the building or company. He also engaged in alot of predatory stock trading as extortion schemes, some of which was later made illegal in places like New Jersey.
