  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I always wanted a flock of chickens, but never did get that wish granted. I used to get hatchery catalogs when my husband and I lived in the country for 7 years, always hoping he would change his mind and let me have a flock and a couple geese, but he would not budge on this issue,LOL! Anyway I especially love the "Heavy" breeds.
Any of you lucky enough to have had chickens, or now have them or other fowl? I love watching them scratch around and enjoying life.

My family used to have a small flock (7-10 hens at a time) of mostly "Rhode Island reds". They were good egg-layers, and it was very nice to have fresh eggs. The trouble is, some of the chickens were killed by minks or raccoons, and once 5 were killed by two huskies (not our dogs) --an incident which I try to forget. I also have bad memories of going outside in freezing January mornings to split the ice out of the water tub, feed the hens, and gather the eggs.

What ever makes you happy, Everyone thought my mom was a nut but she realy enjoyed all the animals and thats what counted,

Sounds like a place all children would love to visit for sure. Such fun. I realize a lot of work is involved as well, but I think it gives you a special feeling to see critters in good health, that you know are that way from your care. Both of my husband's grandma's had chickens, and I really enjoy watching them contendly pecking and scratching about. I also love goats!

Sounds wonderful! My mom lives in a rural area and her next door neighbors have a cow- she is the cutest thing! Makes me almost want one. I would LOVE to have chickens, only I'd be worrying about creatures killing them all the time. And if I did get a flock, I would probably stop eating chicken. :)

I didn't realize they got that tame. That sure would make it hard to ever put them in the pot,or skillet! That is one reason my hubby never allowed them is because he didn't want the job of killing and cleaning them when it was time to replace them. I know most people raised with livestock know that eventually they have to get recycled so you don't make pets of them, but I bet it is hard to not get attached.

Black Australorps, they were excellent layers but the roosters are very aggressive. They were also very pretty birds and I enjoyed watching them run and scratch. They could sometimes come up with some pretty funny antics. I miss them and hope to do it again someday.

Oh darn,I just love the way the roosters look in this breed. Would have never known about their aggressive tendency, thanks for the personal tidbit. Anyone else have any "breed specific" insights like that or how about just personal experiences and name the breed please. I have heard of and seen a few mean roosters, but how about any stories of affectionate roosters or chickens,or mean hens,LOL? I did enjoy the one account on here of the friendly chicken. I did not know one would follow you, except I do know roosters will sometimes chase you,LOL!

My uncle had chickens. The roosters always scared the heck out of me. Having a sharp beaked rooster chasing you AND catching up to you is not my idea of cool. And my friend finally had to find a new home for a rooster that was her dad's because he was so mean. The reason they had that one, was to replace one they had before that was so friendly and loved their dad to pieces. Following him, getting petted, and even following the truck he drove.

I don't know what kind of quail you all mean, but I have quail too. They are wild and always in my front yard. They love it out here.

And geese, I'm assuming you mean Canadian geese, Blessed? They are always flying over our house to go to a lake across the way from us. When we found our property, which was part of farm land, Geese would sit in huge groups here, but not anymore. I'm sure that once we build our lake, they will be back. And that will be really nice. Of course I have seen the aftermath from them. Big ugly poopies everywhere. I would like to have ducks here, but I hear coyotes all the time and I would worry about my duckies. We also have bobcats, foxes, and every once in a while they say there is a panther that has been spotted. So who knows.
