I'm not advocating not eating as healthy as you can....but the main problem I have with this "I'm pregnant and must become superhealth eater for the sake of my baby" idea...

For me its not the pregnancy, its something we should be striving for always.... being a superhealth eater. We don't always succeed over here but its on our mind.

I think eating is one of those areas where we can actually make choices for greater health...but I don't think it should be a stressful thing, particularly not during pregnancy. We can't do a whole lot about other environmental pollutants (unless you have major money)...but food is an area where we have some empowerment.

I think a good diet can help the mother's and the baby's health, I just balk at the idea that any food in moderation or even small amounts is going to cause detriment. Does that make sense? I don't know I'm naseuous and really need a nap....

If caffeine effects you, it effects the baby and even if you don't feel it its effecting the baby. Caffeine does cross to the baby, you can drink it anyway, but you can't say it won't have an effect since that's not what research shows. Maybe the effect doesn't bother you though. I know lots of women who say they had to stop drinking caffeine when breastfeeding because of all the crying their babies would do hours later. I drank caffeine when I was pregnant with David, and he's okay (I would drink caffeine at my job  ), I am not saying its going to cause something terrible to happen, but there will be an effect.

Everything we eat or drink has an effect on our health, pregnant or not. Since I am passing my eating and drinking habits to David I am always trying to improve them by eating lots of veggies and whole grains-- not to mention I would like to be a healthy old lady. :) Ideally I hope to not drink pop at all, which is what I have been doing, but if I absolutely must have it then I will drink Sprite since at least it is caffeine free.

I don't know, considering that 66% of America is officially obese, I think the least we can do is cut out empty calories and yucky drugs like caffeine. But I realize that 66% of America, at the very least, doesn't think so. Oh well, I only have to care for my family so that's what I'll stick to and I'll do the very best job that I can.
You might consider a little more research. I didn't say caffeine doesn't effect people because obviously it does. HOWEVER, a very small amount such as one cup of caffienated iced or hot tea has little if any effect and I'd lean closer to the no effect side of things from the research I have read as well as taking into consideration to what my doctor has said. I do completely agree that drinking a daily generous amount of caffeine is not wise and does have effects on both mother and baby, I have to disagree that one cup every now and then will have effects.

Also I agree that we should strive to eat healthy not only when pregnant but in general but if you're trying to cut out empty calories you might want to cut back on the sprite and juice as well because as I said previously they're loaded with sugar. I'm personally not a soda drinker, I drink more than 8 glasses of water a day even when I'm not pregnant but if soda and juice is something you have to have it's probably a good idea to moderate it a bit. To each his own though  .

It depends on what kind of effect we are talking about. Effect on the birth of the baby no, but caffeine does cross the placenta to the baby. So the baby is effectively caffeinated just like we are when we drink caffeine, despite it not causing us any serious harm either. I don't need to do more research to know this.
