I personally don't think it would ever happen even if Jesus' return wasn't for another 10,000 years. Maybe a few people on the Moon, kind of like how people spend months on the ISS. The challenges of doing that on Mars are, in my opinion, insurmountable. So, to answer your question, yes, I believe it's a waste of money and not God's will for humanity.

I don't really care if it somehow could. Like a spacestation can. The point is no one can flee fro the wrath to come. There will be no hiding place. No escape. Whether they make it to Mars or the Moon or somewhere else will not matter. From thence God will bring them down. All will face the music here.

The issue is not that spending money gets one to heaven. Obviously not, there is only one way to heaven. (Jesus) My issue with that great sucking sound of money being funnelled into outer space is that, 1) There will be no multi planetary humans that escape in this sinful body and state of man, period. and 2) that I think it would be better to love one another and help people with the resources available here on earth.
