Flaws within the NIV translation?

Yeah. Some people prefer the ESV, but I still like my NIV. And the only way to decide if it's a good translation is to check it against the Greek, as I do (and it seems you read Greek as well?)

Everyone should steer clear of versions edited and altered by religious groups that have an agenda to sell.

I think all Bibles are to some extent or another flawed in their translations. I also think that each has its merits, in some case or another proving to be more accurate than others. With respect of the NIV, I have found it to be the MOST ACCURATE translation regards Job 1 : 6. There is also a passage in Isaiah which contains a double entente. Only the NIV has successfully preserved both meanings amoung the 7 versions I have. That said I regard the Jerusalem Bible as being the MOST ACCURATE overall, with the New Revised Standard being the runner up amoung the versions I have.

The New Revised Standard, however, substitutes "the heavenly beings" for "the sons of God". Although the former provide a connection to the reference to "the sons of God" as mentioned in Genesis 6 1 - 4, I believe the most accurate translation for both passages may be found in the New International Versions rendition of Job 1 6.

That's alteration..... by changing "sons of God" to "angels".....

That may, (or may not), be true; - depending on what the ORIGINAL said. But even if true, it is also nonetheless true that : "The Sons Of GOD" who cohabbited with women WERE the "Fallen Angels". And the NIV translation helps clarify that.

I too prefer the New Jerusalem Bible. I have been comparing Bible translations over the past 3 years.

I think the ESV is also a fairly honest translation.

I noticed some of the same problems with the NIV, that you mentioned.

However, for me, the most disturbing part of the NIV, is found in the Preface:

I invite you to read the Preface of the (NIV). Notice Page x, in the last paragraph, fourth sentence, which states, Sometimes a variant Hebrew reading in the margin of the Masoretic Text was followed instead of the text itself. Such instances, being variants among the Masoretic tradition are not specified by footnotes.

NIV translators are admitting in the Preface that they are knowingly using notes, scribbled in the margins by men, as a commentary or for some other purpose; and using those notes to replace the actual text—without so much as a footnote!

I'm sure the NIV is one of many Bible translations, with altered texts.

There has been a long history of alteration of the Holy Scriptures. Unfortunately, it continues today.

Interesting post. I would ask you to do some online research on the History of the King James Bible. You might be surprised by what you find.

As always the starting premise of the poster is incorrect. The assumption that the KJV is right is begging the question. Also, who said that Jehovah is the name of God? I think the Yod Hey Vod Hey is best said as Yaweh.

Anywho, you can't make the KJV the standard to compare other translations without first showing why it should be the standard.
