  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That may be, but it's also part of the problem because it gives people an excuse to let others do their thinking for them.
Seems to be a big chunk of the electorate that lets youtube clowns do ALL of their thinking for them.

I realize that's supposed to be some sort of insult, but it doesn't make any sense at all.

That's kinda the point of specialization though.

If I need legal advice, I'm not going to spend the next several years of my life getting a law degree. I'm going to go to a professional lawyer who already has the education and experience.

If I need taxation advice, I'm not going to spend the next several years getting an accounting degree. I'm going to go to a professional tax accountant who already has the education and experience.

And so on.

For some reason, the minute someone decides on their own personal crusade against whatever, the value of experts in a particular field gets tossed out the window. And in more extreme cases you wind up with the goofy conspiratorial thinking to dismiss the experts. This pervades things like the Flat Earth movement, creationism, anti-vaxxers, and so on.

Did you hire a professional writer to respond to this post, or were you able to form your own thoughts together and present them as you desired?

Red herring, since forum posts are not held to the same standards other types of publications.

On the other hand, if I wanted to write a published book (say an autobiography), I'd hire a professional writer for that.

edited to add:

FWIW, whenever I have had to do professional writing in my career, I've always sought out critiques by those with more experience. And I always try to learn from those critiques so I can improve my own writing in the process. It seems foolish to have expertise in fields and not take advantage of it whenever possible.

You are more than welcome to allow others to do your thinking for you in areas you do not wish to educate yourself, but not all of us fall into that category.

Sure you do. Do you do all your own farming? Auto repair? Road maintenance? Did you engineer your own computer or phone? Build your own telecommunications network? Design and build your own home? Do you diagnose and treat all medical issues yourself?

I guarantee that you rely on the knowledge and expertise of others just like the rest of us.

(And FWIW, I wouldn't equate watching crackpot YouTube videos with an actual education.)

Do you read what I write with understanding? Nope.

Or perhaps you aren't making your point properly. Maybe you should hire a writer to help you out. ;)

Even though you don't understand what I'm saying, let's just go through your list a bit.

Do I do my own farming? Yes, some of it. I have a vegetable garden.

Auto-repair? Yes, some of it. and that I don't do I don't automatically take the mechanics diagnosis at face value without some questioning.

Road maintenance? That's stupid. I'd get fined.

Build my own computer? Yup, I can do that.

Medical issues? Funny you should mention that. When I was diagnosed with diabetes, I refused to go on the medication, did my own research and altered my lifestyle accordingly. I beat diabetes in 3 months with zero meds, and now I don'r even register on the pre-diabetic range. So, yes, sometimes.

No, it's fine. I just think you haven't put the effort into understanding it properly.

It's quite obvious that you don't do any of your own thinking for yourself, as you previously admitted that you would not possibly admit to being wrong about the shape of the earth under any circumstances.

That's a complete lie.

One, I've already admitted I was wrong about the shape, having once been a glober as yourself. Two, I've stated in numerous threads that for me to change my mind, I'd need to see measurable movement and a measurable curve of 8 inches per mile squared.

In a recent thread you stated that you would refuse to consider any model where the earth wasn't flat.

Uh huh. I'll let everyone else judge that.

But let's wind back the conversation a bit to what you previously said: "You are more than welcome to allow others to do your thinking for you in areas you do not wish to educate yourself, but not all of us fall into that category."

If you're claiming to have an education on a particular topic (such as the shape of the Earth), how would go about substantiating that education?

You know who are really good at testing things? SCIENTISTS.
True, but then like Dark Matter after over 15 null results they ignore the results and keep proclaiming its fact...... They got the testing down, but have a tendency to ignore results that don’t go in their favor.

We've discussed that previously. Let's go back to the OP instead. Did you watch the video there and then the response I've provided by the person in the clip?
